There was no shortage of drama during Térence Atmane and Jaume Munar’s tense first-round battle at the 2026 US Open. The closely contested match saw Munar venting his frustrations before Atmane was left incredulous after being denied treatment by the physiotherapist and supervisor despite his struggles.

Atmane made a strong start to his clash against Munar, clinching the first two sets to take a 7-6(5), 6-3 lead and move just one set away from victory. However, the Frenchman began to struggle in the third set, with his movement compromised as he appeared to be dealing with severe cramps.

While serving at 1-0, 40-40 in the third set, Atmane called for the physiotherapist and received treatment on his right leg. He went on to lose the set after resorting to serving with his right hand due to cramping in his dominant hand. The Frenchman then took a bathroom break before the fourth set.
The drama escalated in the fourth set when Munar halted play in the first game and asked the chair umpire to call the supervisor. The Spaniard voiced his frustration over Atmane’s constant conversations with his coach and the delay between his serves, arguing that the umpire should issue time violations.
“Call the supervisor. Three times it happened. It’s point, game over, 1-0, we switch and we play. I don’t care about what’s happening. It’s rules. They’re talking. It happened two times this game. I just asked you the question because of that,” Munar said.
“I didn’t say nothing the first point, the second. It’s the third. It’s game over. Why you don’t call it if you see it?” he continued. “I want you to apply the rules, and that’s why she’s here. It happened three times. I don’t understand.”

Munar went on to win the fourth set and force a decider. However, the match was marred by another controversy when Atmane called for the physiotherapist as the Spaniard led 2-1 in the fifth set. The 24-year-old was refused treatment after the physiotherapist determined that he was suffering from cramps rather than an injury.
Atmane insisted that he was not experiencing cramps but was instead dealing with pain in both his legs, leading to a tense exchange with the physiotherapist and the supervisor.
“Excuse me, can you please give me treatment and then stop acting stupid? Is it possible to have some common sense? I tell him I have pain. Why is he saying no? I have pain. But it’s my body, right? I have pain on both there so I need treatment please,” Atmane said.
“What do you mean, ‘Come on, man.’ I’m telling you I have pain on my both of my legs. It’s not cramping. I have pain. P A I N. Pain. No cramp. Yeah, I know the rules, thats why I’m asking you because I know I cannot get for cramp. It’s not cramp, it’s pain,” he added.
Despite his protests, Atmane was refused treatment in accordance with the ITF rules, which state that a player cannot receive a medical timeout for muscle cramping. Treatment for cramps may be administered only during changeovers and/or set breaks.
“Sorry, we cannot do a treatment,” the supervisor said.
Atmane even called the physiotherapist back to check his credentials, but his request was denied.
“Come back. What’s your credentials?” Atmane asked.

Térence Atmane was forced to resume play without receiving treatment. The thrilling showdown eventually concluded with Jaume Munar sealing a 6-7(5), 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(4), 7-5 victory after a four-hour, 54-minute battle. Munar will now face No. 26 seed Arthur Rinderknech in the second round of the US Open.
