During a game between the Dallas Wings and the Indiana Fever, an on-court interaction between Bueckers and Clark went viral.
In the second quarter, with Dallas trying to manage the clock, Wings rookie Paige Bueckers attempted a routine intentional “take foul” on Clark. Bueckers reached out and yanked Clark’s arm right in front of an official, but no whistle blew. Forced to stop the play, Bueckers grabbed Clark’s arm a second time.
A frustrated Clark yanked her arm back and threw the ball toward another referee in annoyance, prompting Bueckers to hold up a hand and seemingly mouth the words, “Calm down.”
The split-second exchange immediately turned into a viral talking point on social media. On the floor, Dallas pulled away to secure a 91-85 victory. Bueckers finished with 13 points, six rebounds, and eight assists, while the Wings’ defense held Clark to just 10 points on 4-of-15 shooting.
Addressing the viral tussle on her Post Moves podcast, 3-time WNBA champ Parker came to Bueckers’ defense and pointed the finger directly at the officiating crew:
“The lip-reading experts are saying Paige told Caitlin to calm down. But here’s the thing. I kinda blame the refs a little bit because if you don’t hear a whistle, and obviously Paige was trying to foul,” she said.
“She’s fouling, and then she fouls again, and I feel that a little bit. But at the same time, the refs didn’t call the first one. I would’ve been like Paige too. Everybody just calm down,” Parker added.
Following the game, Clark bypassed any discussion about their on-court exchange and chose instead to highlight Bueckers’ exceptional talent. Speaking to reporters during her postgame press conference, Clark praised Bueckers as a formidable player who creates severe challenges for opposing defenses.
“She’s smooth; she finds the open teammate. So she’s just a really tough guard,” Clark said.
The flashpoint is yet another chapter in the competitive rivalry between Clark and Bueckers, which stems back to their legendary NCAA battles at Iowa and UConn. While fans love to paint their matchups as personal feuds, this clash was less about bad blood and more about on-court miscommunication stemming from a delayed call.
