It’s no secret that Pat McAfee is a polarizing figure. Whether you hate him or you love him, the fact is: Most people tune in to watch him.
Whether it’s McAfee jumping into bodies of water on College GameDay, being the center of attention on whatever stage he’s standing on, or simply giving his perspective on news in the sports world, the former punter always has an audience.
Now, ESPN has expanded that audience even further by having McAfee lead an alternative broadcast for Monday Night Football, and the NFL world is reacting.
NFL Analysts Give Opinions on Pat McAfee’s Leading MNF Broadcast
ESPN recently announced that one of its most polarizing figures would be joining the Monday Night Countdown show alongside Scott Van Pelt, Jason Kelce, Jason McCourty, and Marcus Spears.
Now, the network is working on a McAfee-led alternative broadcast that would air on the weeks Peyton and Eli Manning are off from the “ManningCast.”
However, some people think ESPN has taken its McAfee attention too far.
“Never in the history of media has there ever been anything I would want to watch less,” Pro Football Network’s fantasy football analyst Jason Katz wrote on X.

“After the backlash from yesterday’s news, ESPN thought fans clearly wanted MORE McAfee,” PFN’s editor-in-chief Ryan Gosling wrote sarcastically.

PFN’s fantasy sports and betting analyst Kyle Soppe took a different route, pointing out why ESPN is making the decision.
“This is a good reminder of the echo chamber that is social media. The comments are all negative,” Soppe said. “The ratings will be all positive. These companies make decisions based on viewer tendencies… they aren’t random.”

Then, some had some jokes as ESPN widened the audience of one of its already largest figures.

“Pat McAfee is the most used punter that we’ve ever seen outside of the Iowa Hawkeyes roster,” PFN’s Senior Director of Operations Oliver Hodgkinson wrote.

“Is ESPN gonna have a single second of air time this year that doesn’t have Pat McAfee on it? They are milking everything they can out of him, and Stephen A,” PFN’s Director of Media Partnerships Jacob Infante wrote on X.
“Pat McAfee and Stephen A. Smith after carrying ESPN,” PFN’s Brandon Austin added while sharing a picture of NBA star Jimmy Butler looking exhausted.

As if McAfee wasn’t polarizing enough. The MNF news comes after the former punter-turned media member released a country album about the legacy of his career.
The album was met with strong backlash from the public, despite McAfee reiterating that he wrote nearly all of the songs himself, drawing on his own life experiences.
Regardless of whether you like watching McAfee or not, Soppe has a point. The polarizing figure gets attention, and attention drives revenue, and it will continue to do so. It will be interesting to see the viewership numbers from McAfee’s new shows in 2026.
