The Pittsburgh Penguins have made it clear they are willing to paint outside the lines as they reshape the franchise for the future. This approach took center stage again when general manager Kyle Dubas handed out a long-term contract that few (if any) around the league saw coming.
The decision has now become one of the NHL’s biggest talking points, with fans and analysts questioning both the timing and the size of the commitment.
Kyle Dubas’s $32M Bet on RFA Ville Koivunen Stuns NHL Media
Ville Koivunen became the center of league-wide discussion after the Penguins signed the restricted free agent to an eight-year, $32 million extension.
The 23-year-old Finnish forward has appeared in just 47 NHL games, making the agreement one of the more surprising long-term commitments handed to a player with limited NHL experience.
Koivunen arrived in Pittsburgh as part of the Jake Guentzel trade with the Carolina Hurricanes in March 2024 and has developed into one of the organization’s top prospects.
Although his NHL production remains modest with two goals and 14 points, his offensive numbers in the AHL and Finland’s Liiga have convinced the Penguins that his upside is worth investing in before the league’s rising salary cap changes the market.
The contract carries a $4 million average annual value through the 2033-34 season, giving Pittsburgh long-term cost certainty if Koivunen develops into the top-six playmaker the organization believes he can become.
Still, the extension does not guarantee him a permanent NHL role, and he will have to earn his place in training camp.

Penguins insider Josh Yohe later explained the organization’s thinking, writing on X, “I was told that Dubas sees the Koivunen deal as ‘low risk, high reward.’ Which is to say, the cap is rising to the point that he’s willing to risk losing $4 million annually for 8 years if Koivunen is a bust.”
This perspective frames the extension as a calculated business decision rather than a reward for past NHL production.
Even with that explanation, the deal caught many analysts off guard. Yohe summed up the surprise in another post, writing, “I’ve seen some weird [expletive] in my day. This is right up there.”
Analytics JFresh reacted even more briefly, posting, “Hahaha what?”
Others focused more on Koivunen’s long-term ceiling than his current resume. Steve “Dangle” Glynn described it as a “Huge bet on a promising piece from the Jake Guentzel trade,” while analyst Foley argued that the underlying numbers point toward a breakout, calling Koivunen “an A+ prospect” and expressing confidence in his future.
Dubas also addressed the reasoning behind the extension, explaining that the evolving marketplace influenced the decision. The Penguins GM said the organization views the contract as “a bet” on Koivunen’s potential and its confidence that the young forward will put in the work needed to justify Pittsburgh’s faith over the coming years.
