Panthers head coach Dave Canales confirmed earlier this week that Bryce Young will not play in tonight’s Hall of Fame Game.
With Young resting alongside top first-team starters, veteran quarterback Kenny Pickett will start under center for Carolina. Pickett, who joined the Panthers to secure the primary backup role, is scheduled to handle the opening series before giving way to undrafted rookie Haynes King.
Canales emphasized the value of live game reps for secondary depth while managing overall workload during training camp, saying: “We have a good number of non-starters that will be helping out early on in the game, just because we don’t want to overload any one particular group on our team.”
“We do have practices leading into the game, and we have practices coming out of it, so I felt that with a number of guys being out there, being able to take a couple of series will really help the whole group, and we just need the football,” Canales said. “So I’m excited about it, and Kenny is excited as well as the rest of the group, and they’ve been talking a lot about it.”
