Dak Prescott played at an MVP level last season, but not everyone is ready to put him in that conversation.
Former All-Pro running back and two-time Super Bowl champion LeSean McCoy made it clear on “Speakeasy”, arguing Prescott still has more to prove before earning serious MVP consideration.

“I hate to get this take because you’re not gonna like it, but I’m not even talking about MVP because MVP, I mean, you got to get to the playoffs,” McCoy said.
That’s the crux of his argument. Prescott has missed the postseason two years running, and McCoy isn’t interested in stats without results attached.
It’s easy to see why MVP chatter is following Prescott around. He threw for 4,552 yards and 30 touchdowns in 2025, completing 67.3% of his passes for a 99.5 passer rating.

According to Pro Football Network’s 2025 QB Impact Rankings, Prescott graded out at 82.1, good for sixth among starting quarterbacks behind Drake Maye, Matthew Stafford, Brock Purdy, Jordan Love, and Sam Darnold.
But Dallas finished 7-9-1. The offense ranked seventh in scoring, yet the defense gave up an NFL-worst 30.1 points per game. That gap between individual production and team results is exactly what McCoy is pointing at.

McCoy didn’t just call out the record; he called out the culture around Prescott and added, “You know, I feel like with the Cowboys, we always make excuses up for Dak Prescott. I’m tired of that.”
McCoy also pointed to Prescott’s massive contract as part of the equation. Prescott signed a four-year, $240 million extension in September 2024, making him, at that time, the NFL’s highest-paid player at $60 million per year.
He has since dropped to second after the Chiefs gave Patrick Mahomes a record $64 million annual extension.
With $231 million guaranteed, per ESPN, McCoy argued Prescott should be held to a higher standard. “If the defense is not good enough, right, I don’t want that to be the excuse. Elevate them,” McCoy said.

McCoy pointed out that Prescott isn’t lacking for support on offense. CeeDee Lamb remains one of the league’s top receivers, and Dallas added a second true number-one option.
“You got two number one receivers, you have a really, really good head coach in Shotty. It’s time to put it together and get to the playoffs,” McCoy added.
He wasn’t asking for a Super Bowl run either. Dallas hasn’t reached the NFC Championship Game since the 1995 season, the longest drought in the conference.
Prescott has led the Cowboys to five playoff appearances in his career but is just 2-5 in the postseason, with zero trips past the Divisional Round.
McCoy’s message boils down to one simple ask. Forget the individual hardware conversation until the team conversation gets fixed.
“So all I want to say is, before we talk about MVPs, let’s try to win the division and let’s try to get in the playoffs,” he said.
The numbers may come again, but for Prescott, the next step is winning. If Dallas can’t get back to the playoffs, the MVP chatter might not gain much traction.
