Jalen Hurts was on top of the world after defeating the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 59 and being named Super Bowl MVP. The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback had seemingly put to rest all questions about his ability as a passer and established himself as one of the NFL’s premier quarterbacks.
However, Hurts followed that success with a disappointing 2025 campaign, drawing widespread criticism, with some insiders even reporting that he was holding the offense back.
Michael Irvin Baffled by Media’s Treatment of Jalen Hurts
Since Hurts became Philadelphia’s starting quarterback, his game has been under constant scrutiny. While he regularly makes plays that few other quarterbacks can, critics have often pointed to the more fundamental aspects of his game, such as his accuracy, ability to elevate the offense, and willingness to throw over the middle, as reasons for the Eagles’ offensive struggles.
Last season, those concerns became more pronounced. Reports also surfaced that tension was brewing between Hurts and the team’s top receiver, A.J. Brown, who was ultimately traded to the New England Patriots.
During the offseason, ESPN published a report citing team sources that said, “Hurts has had a hand in the offense becoming calcified.”
Many interpreted the report as a warning for the 27-year-old quarterback, but Irvin has grown tired of the narratives running around against Hurts.
“What I’m shocked about is the treatment of Jalen Hurts. Why is that like this? Why are you guys trying to get rid of Jalen Hurts already? Blows my mind,” the former Dallas Cowboys receiver told Philadelphia Inquirer Sports.

Last season, Hurts threw for 3,224 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions, ranking 16th in PFSN’s QB Impact Metric (QBi). However, his 64.8% completion percentage ranked 21st in the league.
While those numbers are not poor on the surface, the offense as a whole struggled to move the ball and score consistently the way it had in previous years. As a result, the Eagles ranked 23rd in PFSN’s Offense Impact Metric (OFFi), averaging just 22.3 points per game.
However, Hurts is a Super Bowl-winning quarterback who lifted the Lombardi Trophy just two seasons ago, so moving on from him this quickly makes little sense to Irvin. That said, both Irvin’s stance and the Eagles’ long-term outlook could change if Hurts delivers another underwhelming season.
Philadelphia has brought in a new offensive coordinator, Sean Mannion, after firing Kevin Patullo. With Brown also gone after a partnership that reportedly never fully clicked with Hurts, the quarterback has little excuse not to take a step forward this season.
