Montreal Canadiens Urged to Battle Panthers, Maple Leafs in Chase For Veteran D-Man

Montreal could enter a crowded free-agent race as two Atlantic Division rivals also pursue a veteran defenseman with playoff experience.

This NHL offseason is perhaps the most important one for the Montreal Canadiens due to rising expectations around a young roster that showed meaningful progress in the 2025-26 season.

While the organization remains focused on developing its emerging core, questions still surround the blueline and whether additional veteran help is needed. As rival contenders look to strengthen their defensive depth ahead of free agency, Montreal has now been linked to a rugged defenseman who could address an area of need.

This discussion has led directly to a potential bidding war involving two Atlantic Division rivals, bringing fresh attention to one of the most experienced defensemen available this summer.

Canadiens Face Competition for Radko Gudas in Free Agency

Radko Gudas has emerged as a name Montreal may want to pursue if he reaches unrestricted free agency on July 1. The 36-year-old defenseman recently completed a three-year contract with the Anaheim Ducks, and his future remains uncertain as extension talks continue.

Interest in Gudas intensified after NHL insider Kevin Weekes reported that both the Florida Panthers and Toronto Maple Leafs could be among the leading destinations if Anaheim cannot secure a new agreement.

Shortly after that report surfaced, hockey insider Jimmy Murphy publicly pushed for Montreal’s involvement, posting, “#GoHabsGo should be in on this!”

The reasoning behind this suggestion is straightforward.

Montreal possesses one of the NHL’s most promising young defensive groups, led by Lane Hutson, Kaiden Guhle, and David Reinbacher in the pipeline. Still, adding a veteran known for physical play, shot blocking, and playoff experience could provide stability while easing pressure on younger players still developing.

Gudas built his reputation as one of hockey’s toughest defenders and served as Anaheim’s captain. During his time with the Ducks, he led the team’s defensemen in hits and blocked shots while continuing to play a demanding defensive role. His ability to clear the front of the net and handle difficult defensive assignments is exactly the type of element Montreal currently lacks.

The financial side of a potential deal also appears manageable. The Canadiens are projected to have nearly $11 million in salary cap space, giving general manager Kent Hughes flexibility to pursue short-term veteran additions. Because Lane Hutson’s long-term extension is already part of the team’s future planning, any pursuit of Gudas would likely need to remain limited to a short 2- or 3-year commitment.

Still, several obstacles remain.

Florida presents a strong challenge because Gudas previously enjoyed success with the Panthers and helped the franchise reach the Stanley Cup Final in 2023. Toronto is also searching for experienced defensive help as new general manager John Chayka reshapes the roster following a disappointing season.

Another factor is Gudas’ reported reluctance in the past to play under the intense spotlight that comes with Canadian markets. This history could complicate Montreal’s efforts even if the organization presents a competitive offer.

For the Canadiens, the appeal is clear. Gudas would not arrive as a long-term cornerstone, but he could serve as an experienced bridge piece while helping protect and mentor a talented young defensive core that remains central to Montreal’s future plans.
