NHL Free Agency Watch: Islanders’ Anders Lee Could Leave New York To Join Central Division Super-Team

Islanders captain Anders Lee could leave New York in free agency as a Central Division contender emerges as a potential landing spot.

The New York Islanders are entering a crucial offseason with several important roster decisions to address. Among the biggest questions is the future of captain Anders Lee, whose contract has expired at a time when the organization is trying to balance financial flexibility with long-term planning.

While both sides have expressed interest in continuing their relationship, recent developments suggest that a return is far from guaranteed.

This uncertainty has opened the door to outside interest, and one Central Division contender is already being discussed as a logical destination if Lee reaches the open market.

Minnesota Wild Emerging as Serious Option if Anders Lee Hits Free Agency

Lee’s situation has become an intriguing storyline ahead of July 1. The longtime Islanders captain is coming off the final season of a 7-year, $49 million contract and is expected to test unrestricted free agency as extension talks with New York still appear far from sight.

According to reporting from TSN insider Pierre LeBrun, Lee and the Islanders remain significantly apart on both contract value and term. New York’s front office must manage a limited salary cap situation while also addressing other roster priorities, making negotiations increasingly complicated.

The possibility of Lee leaving has generated speculation around potential destinations, and NHL insider Michael Russo believes the Minnesota Wild could become a legitimate player if the veteran winger reaches the market. Writing for The Athletic, Russo pointed to the fit between Lee and Minnesota’s roster, particularly alongside Joel Eriksson Ek.

Russo wrote, “If Lee, who turns 36 on July 3, does hit free agency and the Wild have interest, chances are he’d look at them hard.” He also highlighted how a line featuring Lee and Eriksson Ek could create major problems for opposing defenses because of their size, strength, and willingness to battle around the net.

The appeal extends beyond hometown connections.

Lee was born in Edina, Minnesota, making a move to the Wild a potential homecoming at this stage of his career. Minnesota is also searching for experienced forwards who can contribute in difficult areas of the ice, an area where Lee has built his reputation throughout his NHL career.

Even after a season in which he scored 19 goals, Lee remains a respected net-front presence and one of the league’s more durable veterans. Russo noted that Lee has played 81 or 82 games in each of the last four seasons, crediting his conditioning and consistency.

For the Islanders, the preference remains keeping their captain in New York. General manager Mathieu Darche has publicly stated that he hopes Lee reaches the 1,000-game milestone with the franchise. However, with negotiations stalled and free agency rapidly approaching, that outcome is becoming less certain.

“I met with his agent, Neil Sheehy, here this week,” Darche said earlier this month. “I said at the end of the year I’d love for Anders to play his 1,000th game with the Islanders, but it has to work for us and for him. He’s earned the right to look at options where he is in his career.”

If Lee ultimately reaches the open market, the Minnesota Wild could find themselves in a strong position to add an experienced leader, proven scorer, and physical presence to a roster looking to strengthen its push in the Central Division.
