The NHL offseason has a way of making a player’s future a league-wide talking point, and one proven American center is becoming the subject of exactly that kind of attention.
As teams look for answers down the middle, several contenders have begun circling a New York Rangers veteran whose combination of experience, consistency, and playoff pedigree remains highly valued. The Rangers are listening to offers, and that has opened the door to a growing list of interested teams.
Among those teams, the Pittsburgh Penguins appear to be a particularly intriguing fit. However, they may not be alone in the chase, with both the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens also surfacing in recent discussions.
Penguins Could Join Maple Leafs, Canadiens in Pursuit of Vincent Trocheck
Vincent Trocheck has emerged as one of the most discussed trade candidates of the summer, and Pittsburgh’s interest is easy enough to understand.
The Team USA gold medalist is signed through the 2028-29 season on a seven-year, $39.375 million contract carrying a manageable $5.625 million cap hit, making him an attractive option for teams seeking stability at center.
For the Penguins, the appeal extends beyond his on-ice production.
Trocheck is a Pittsburgh native who grew up playing youth hockey in the area. More importantly, he addresses a significant roster need. Pittsburgh struggled in the faceoff circle last season, while Trocheck remained one of the league’s most dependable draw specialists, winning 56.9% of his faceoffs.
The veteran center also offers lineup flexibility.
Many observers believe he could slide into the No. 2 center role and allow Evgeni Malkin to spend more time on the wing. This possibility gained additional attention after Penguins insider Josh Yohe responded to fan skepticism regarding the idea of acquiring a 32-year-old center.
When one fan asked, “Why would Dubas want a 32-year-old center?” Yohe replied, “He just signed a 40-year-old RW.” After another fan argued that “Trocheck is not Malkin,” Yohe clarified, “I never said he was. But while wanting the team to get younger, Dubas brought Malkin back. Also signed Mantha when he was about to turn 31. So it’s not unimaginable.”

How Many Teams Have Been Linked to Trocheck?
Pittsburgh is far from the only team connected to Trocheck.
Rangers reporter Vincent Mercogliano recently listed several teams that have been linked to the veteran center, including Minnesota, Carolina, Boston, and Detroit.
The Canadiens have also generated attention.
Ottawa Citizen insider Bruce Garrioch reported that Montreal executives Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton may have discussed a potential Trocheck deal with New York earlier this offseason. Their interest highlights how strong the market remains.
Toronto has likewise been mentioned as a possible destination. NHL analyst Adam Herman noted that Trocheck would fit the Maple Leafs well but questioned whether Toronto possesses the trade assets necessary to outbid competing teams.
This growing competition is exactly why the Rangers continue to hold significant leverage. Trocheck recorded 53 points in 67 games last season and remains a reliable two-way center on a team-friendly contract.
