Canadiens Trade Rumors: ‘Talk in League Circles’ Indicates $39,375,000 Team USA Gold Medalist Was a Trade Deadline Option

The Montreal Canadiens took a significant step forward during the 2025-26 season, but their playoff run also highlighted areas that still need attention. While the team has built an impressive young core around Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, Juraj Slafkovský, and Lane Hutson, questions remain about the depth down the middle.

As the front office searches for ways to strengthen the roster, fresh details have emerged about a notable move Montreal reportedly explored behind the scenes.

Report Connects Canadiens to Vincent Trocheck Trade Talks

Montreal’s pursuit of a proven veteran center appears to have gone much further than previously known. According to one report, the organization explored a major deal that could have addressed one of the team’s most pressing needs while adding an accomplished player with international success to its roster.

The player in question is Vincent Trocheck, the New York Rangers center who recently captured Olympic gold with Team USA and remains under contract through the 2028-29 season as part of a 7-year, $39.375 million agreement.

Ottawa Citizen insider Bruce Garrioch revealed that discussions may have taken place between the two teams regarding the veteran center.

Garrioch wrote, “The talk in league circles is that [Kent] Hughes and Jeff Gorton, the Habs’ vice-president of hockey operations, may have been in talks with the New York Rangers for a trade that would have included centre Vincent Trocheck in return.”

The report offers insight into how aggressively Montreal was attempting to upgrade its roster before the trade deadline. Trocheck checks several boxes that the Canadiens have been trying to address. He is an established top-six center, wins faceoffs at a high rate, contributes in all situations, and brings playoff experience that could help balance a young lineup.

Trocheck also played a key role on Team USA’s penalty kill during its gold medal run and has built a reputation as one of the league’s more reliable two-way centers. For a Canadiens team seeking more support behind Suzuki, he represents a natural fit.

The obstacle, however, was never just the acquisition cost. Trocheck still has three seasons remaining on his 7-year, $39,375,000 contract, which carries a team-friendly $5.625 million cap hit, giving Rangers general manager Chris Drury little reason to lower his demands.

Montreal also faces financial challenges of its own. With Lane Hutson’s extension set to kick in and several restricted free agents requiring new contracts, fitting Trocheck into the salary structure would likely require additional moves.

Another factor is Trocheck’s trade protection. His contract includes a limited no-trade clause, and any potential move would require his approval. While Montreal’s East Coast location may be more appealing than certain alternatives, that protection still gives the veteran center influence over his future.

For now, no deal has materialized. Yet Garrioch’s report suggests Montreal’s interest was real, and with the Rangers continuing to reshape their roster, this is a situation worth monitoring throughout the offseason.

If the Canadiens remain determined to solve their second-line center question, Trocheck could find himself back on their radar sooner rather than later.
