One of the biggest storylines entering the 2026 season is how LSU will do in the first season of the Lane Kiffin era. Given his success at Ole Miss, the expectations for him remain sky-high in Baton Rouge.
Analyst Gives LSU Head Coach Lane Kiffin a Reality Check Ahead of 2026 Season
Analyst David Ubben from the “Bunch Formation” podcast shared insights on Kiffin’s position at LSU heading into the new season and offered a kind of warning for him.
“Lane Kiffin’s expectations are going to be so high,” Ubben said. “And I think what happens here is they don’t love you. Like, they don’t love Lane Kiffin. Lane is a hired gun at this point. He’s got no relationship with LSU.
“It’s not like a Scott Frost situation, or you know, a Kenny Dillingham situation or whatever, where a guy’s coming home, and there’s going to be a lot of patience, and everybody wants you to succeed. But if it doesn’t go well, if they stumble out of the gate and you go 7-5, like LSU, the expectations are so high there, they will turn quickly.”
LSU is heading into the 2026 season full of optimism after the mediocrity of the Brian Kelly era; Kelly finished his tenure 34-14 but without a CFP appearance. At a place like Baton Rouge, postseason success is ultimately the standard by which coaches are judged, and so it was not surprising.
Kelly has also expressed confidence in Kiffin, saying during an interview on “Sports Seriously” from USA Today this week that he believes Kiffin could win a championship at LSU. However, Kelly did not credit Kiffin alone for that potential success; instead, he pointed to LSU reportedly operating with a $40 million NIL valuation for its roster.
Kelly explained that LSU’s aggressive NIL approach allows Kiffin to “be Lane Kiffin,” relying heavily on elite veteran transfers instead of the more traditional long-term development of high school recruits. Meanwhile, David Pollack discussed Kelly’s comments regarding Kiffin and said LSU’s spending could be even higher.
“He (Lane Kiffin) literally spent more money than anybody this offseason. Maybe not Texas Tech,” Pollack said in his “See Ball Get Ball” podcast. “Whatever your numbers are, here’s what I can tell you because I’m doing an NIL documentary right now and meeting with all these folks. Go to 60, and then we can have a conversation. 60,000,000,000 like and Lane Kiffin and them are way up there spending a sh*t ton of money.”
That is certainly a massive claim, but regardless of the exact figure, the investment helped Kiffin assemble the No. 1-ranked transfer portal class in the country for 2026. LSU also handed Kiffin a seven-year, $91 million contract upon his arrival, and so it is clear that anything less than a CFP berth may be seen as a disappointment.
According to PFSN’s current playoff predictor, LSU holds a 39.2% chance of reaching the College Football Playoff in 2026.
