‘I Know How He Is’ — Mike Vrabel’s Hall-of-Fame Patriots Teammate Vince Wilfork Reacts to Dianna Russini Scandal

Vince Wilfork reacts to Mike Vrabel's controversy involving Dianna Russini, predicting the Patriots locker room will accept him.

There’s no shortage of opinions on the Mike Vrabel–Dianna Russini situation. But the noise tends to matter less than the voices coming from people who actually know them. That’s why Jon ‘Stugotz’ Wiener’s recent comments stood out when he shared that he’d spoken with Russini, noted she’s been affected by the fallout, and made a point to defend her character amid the swirl.

Vrabel, meanwhile, has had backing inside the New England Patriots building, including from quarterback Drake Maye. But coming from someone who’s been in the trenches with him, hits differently. So, here’s Vince Wilfork, a Patriots Hall of Famer and Vrabel’s former teammate, vouching for his guy in this storm.

Vince Wilfork Offers Unfiltered Perspective on Mike Vrabel Amid Dianna Russini Controversy

Wilfork didn’t try to reframe the question or dodge it. He addressed it head-on, the same way he expects Vrabel to. Maybe that’s the Patriots’ way.

“I love Mike. Mike is a great guy, a great coach,” Wilfork said. “He’s been a coach and teammate of mine. I know how he is. I know he told them, ‘I eff’d up.’ He’s going to face it like a man, and hope for the best. He’s going to be real about it.”

Even Alijah Vera-Tucker described Vrabel as “open and honest” when addressing the team. And that’s important because it reflects ownership of his decisions to the roster, which is a good leadership quality.

Wilfork’s belief is rooted in that dynamic.

“I think he can (recover). I think the relationship he has with his players, he’s let it be known how much he cares for them, how much he loves them,” Wilford added. “And I think it’s going to be all about him delivering to the players what he’s going through to some extent.”

“He’s going to be honest with them… and I think the team is going to accept him for who he is,” he continued. “They love their head coach. They love playing for their head coach, so I don’t think the football aspect will change.”

It’s a view that leans heavily on locker-room reality rather than public optics. And it’s not an isolated one. Rodney Harrison took it a step further, suggesting the situation could actually tighten the group.

“They have a great deal of empathy. So I think they’ll understand, and they’ll forgive Mike. I think it’ll bring the locker room even closer together,” Harrison said.

Vrabel himself has already acknowledged the distraction, saying he’s had “positive and productive” conversations with his family and team while taking accountability for his actions.

That process has included stepping away briefly for counseling, with expectations that he’ll continue to balance time between football and personal matters.

Despite all the speculation, the internal message has remained consistent: support, accountability, and a focus on moving forward. After all, the Patriots would love to move on from this and focus on building on the momentum of the 2025 season.

Making it to Super Bowl 60, the Patriots’ offensive unit finished No. 2 overall in the league according to PFSN’s NFL Offense Impact metrics. As for the defense, it ranked No. 12 in PFSN’s Defense Impact metrics.

As Devin McCourty put it, the timeline for all of this ultimately comes down to what happens on Sundays.

“If you can get to the point of going out and winning football games, people forget about things,” McCourty said. “If you win, it makes things easier.”

That’s the reality now. The Patriots don’t need to win a press cycle; they need to win game, and everything’s at stake.
