The Mike Vrabel–Dianna Russini scandal has transcended sports and become a massive story with new bombshells dropping seemingly every day. Since the controversy erupted, the New England Patriots head coach has held two press conferences, but Russini has yet to speak out and share her side of the story.
In the aftermath of the scandal, Russini resigned from The Athletic while Vrabel stepped away from the team during Day 3 of the 2026 NFL Draft to enter counseling alongside his family. The Patriots have publicly supported Vrabel and the NFL has stated that they aren’t launching an investigation since the league is treating it as a personal matter.
However, the big question is what Russini will ultimately say (if anything) and whether additional bombshells from a tell-all interview could impact Vrabel’s job security. The NFL world is curious about Russini’s next move, who she’ll sit down with, and whether she’ll try to take others down with her.
NFL World Floats Scenarios for Dianna Russini’s Next Move
Nikki Gist, the co-host of “Between The Uprights” and “Hot Takes Hard Lines,” believes Russini should speak out and not hold back.
“Just waiting for that Dianna Russini tell-all where she decides to go for broke and take half the industry down with her,” she wrote on X.
In a follow-up post, she suggested that if Russini comes clean, admits fault, apologizes, and starts naming names, there’s still a path back to keeping her career.
“She just needs to embrace the absolute mess she made,” she added. “She doesn’t really have a choice at this point. The fact that people lost jobs and got raked over the coals for simply telling the truth is not ok. The fact that she made a complete joke of every woman who works in journalism is not ok.
“But as much as the public loves a takedown story, they love the comeback even more. If she plays her cards right, she can somewhat bounce back, but mostly in an independent capacity. She needs to find a PR firm that will work with her because right now, no one wants to touch her unless she owns up to everything and makes an attempt to salvage whatever is left of her brand.”
BSO’s Robert Littal agreed that Russini has the option to burn a ton of bridges with her tell-all interview.
“I don’t think she will, BUT if Mrs. Russini felt there were no options left, she could burn it all down and take several people and organizations with her,” Littal wrote on X.
There has been speculation that the Patriots could try to reach an NDA agreement with Russini to ensure that additional details don’t come to light. If Russini comes forward, the bombshells can only hurt Vrabel and the Patriots.
If Russini agrees to stay quiet, she could potentially get a nice payday and let the story fizzle out. But to Gist’s point, speaking out may be the best move if she intends to continue her career.
Radio host Jared Stillman weighed in, arguing that Russini should take the best payday possible, whether that’s an NDA, a media sit-down, or a podcast deal.
“What is Dianna Russini going to do next? My advice would be to take the best deal,” Stillman wrote on X. “Whether that is an NDA from the Patriots or Vrabel, a podcast on Alex Cooper’s Unwell Network, or a sit-down with Oprah, take the best deal and view it as your last big payday.”
Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio has stated that Vrabel could be “one development away from something that makes it impossible for him to return” as the Patriots’ head coach.
“I think that there is a non-zero chance he’s not the coach come Week 1. … One more photo dump. Or I think at some point, Russini is going to say, ‘I’ve got nothing to do but tell my story,'” Florio added. “What if she tells her story to the ‘Today Show’ or ’60 Minutes’? What does she say? Is that the tipping point where Mike Vrabel can’t coach the Patriots this year? So they better have a plan ready, because we’re one news cycle away, potentially, at any given moment, from him not being able to coach the team this year.”
Patriots owner Robert Kraft reportedly tried to kill the initial photos of Vrabel and Russini before they were published, so it’s not crazy to think he’d be willing to open his wallet to prevent further bombshells with an NDA.
For now, all eyes are on Russini and her next move, but it remains to be seen whether she’ll speak out and share her version of events.
