Carlos Alcaraz ‘Surprised’ by Jannik Sinner’s Monte-Carlo Decision As He Eyes Showdown

Carlos Alcaraz admits he is surprised by Jannik Sinner's Monte-Carlo Masters decision as he eyes their first battle of the year.

Carlos Alcaraz arrives at the 2026 Monte-Carlo Masters as the defending champion, but the Spaniard is already looking over his shoulder. Jannik Sinner just dominated his way through the Sunshine Double, making history by triumphing in both Indian Wells and Miami. Now, instead of taking a well-deserved break, the Italian star is all set to kick off his clay-court season in Monaco.

Carlos Alcaraz Taken Aback by Jannik Sinner’s Monte-Carlo Masters Entry

The Monte-Carlo Masters stands out as the only non-mandatory Masters 1000 event on the ATP Tour, providing top players with a chance to rest before the demanding European clay swing intensifies. As such, several top American players, including Ben Shelton and Tommy Paul, opted to skip the trip to the French Riviera. Jannik Sinner, however, made the opposite call, a move that has caught Carlos Alcaraz by surprise.

Speaking to Sky Sport Tennis ahead of his campaign, the world No. 1 asserted that Sinner’s decision to participate reflects his current form and confidence. He also expressed his desire to lock horns with the Italian on clay, pointing out that they had yet to meet this season. The rivals have clashed 16 times on the ATP Tour, with Alcaraz enjoying a 10-6 lead in their head-to-head record.

“Honestly, I was surprised that Jannik, after the Indian Wells and Miami tour, came to play in Monte Carlo. But obviously, this shows what he is capable of doing right now. Hopefully, we can play here in Monte Carlo. Who knows? This year, we didn’t even play one time yet. Hopefully, it happens in clay season,” Alcaraz said.

Sinner’s decision isn’t entirely unexpected, as he has the opportunity to snatch the world No. 1 ranking from Alcaraz at the Monte-Carlo Masters. With Alcaraz defending 1,000 points, the Italian can reclaim the crown by winning the title in Monaco.

There are also alternative paths for Sinner to return to the top. A semifinal run will be enough if the Spaniard crashes out before the quarterfinals. Reaching the final could also see the four-time Grand Slam champion reach the top spot, provided Alcaraz falls short of the title clash.
