Brandon Aiyuk’s uncertain future with the San Francisco 49ers continues to fuel speculation around the league. What once looked like a simple contract dispute has now evolved into a much stranger standoff involving trade whispers, injury concerns, and a possible NFC contender waiting in the background.
The Washington Commanders have long been linked to Aiyuk, especially given his personal ties to their field general, Jayden Daniels. But as the offseason drags on, one NFL insider believes San Francisco may be intentionally slowing the process down.
49ers May Be Using Brandon Aiyuk To Pressure Washington
Speaking with talkSPORT, The Athletic’s Matt Barrows explained why he believes the 49ers may be holding onto Aiyuk longer than expected, particularly if they suspect Washington is still seriously interested in making a move.
“They have dumped a ton of resources — monetary, all the rehab efforts that they went through — into him [Aiyuk], and they want something back,” Barrows said. “I also think, it’s just my suspicion, that they feel like the Washington Commanders are angling for Brandon Aiyuk, and you understand why.”
Barrows’ point centered on the belief that Washington’s prior interest, combined with Aiyuk’s own preference during his contract saga, could still be shaping San Francisco’s strategy. He also pointed to Aiyuk’s ongoing communication with Daniels as a factor that may be adding tension behind the scenes.
“Aiyuk wanted to be traded to the Commanders during their contract dispute,” Barrows added. “He is good friends with Jayden Daniels, and Jayden Daniels has been communicating with Brandon Aiyuk throughout this whole weird, I call it ‘fade-pattern’ that he has run.
Barrows then took the idea a step further, suggesting the 49ers may see value in delaying any movement if it increases urgency in Washington.
“The longer he is held ‘hostage’ — I think it puts pressure on the Commanders,” Barrows continued. “If the Commanders are in fact counting on or thinking about having Brandon Aiyuk as part of their wide-receiving core — and they do need to add another receiver in Washington — the longer you hold him, the more nervous I think the Commanders get.”

“They [Commanders] want him in the building, they want to see his knee, for example,” Barrows added. “They want that to happen sooner rather than later, and if the 49ers are holding on to him, maybe that is an impetus to get a deal done.”
Aiyuk’s Strange 49ers Exit Has Left Plenty of Questions Still Unanswered
Part of what makes this situation so unusual is how dramatically things appeared to shift between Aiyuk and the 49ers. After months of trade speculation and indecision during his holdout, the wide receiver ultimately stayed, only for the relationship to seemingly unravel further after his knee injury.
San Francisco’s offense, however, remained productive overall. According to PFSN’s Offense Impact Metric, the 49ers finished 12-5 and posted an 85.2 OFFi score, which ranked fourth in the league, and earned a B grade.
That context matters because it suggests San Francisco is still operating from a position of relative strength, not desperation. If that’s the case, the 49ers may feel comfortable waiting out the market, especially if they believe Washington is growing more anxious by the day. And until Aiyuk publicly explains his side, the silence will likely keep this trade drama alive.
