Lavonte David Explains His Retirement After 14-Year Buccaneers Run: ‘I’ve Done Enough’

Lavonte David explains his decision to retire from the Buccaneers after 14 seasons, stating he has done enough for the game.

Retirements usually come after a player’s body gives out. Others come when the player simply knows it is time. That is how Lavonte David described his decision after 14 seasons in Tampa Bay. He made it sound like a player who still could have kept going, but no longer felt the need to.

Lavonte David Discusses His Decision to Retire

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker officially retired this week, closing the book on one of the most accomplished and respected careers of his era. Now, David says the decision was rooted in peace as much as anything else.

Appearing on “The Pat McAfee Show,” David said he reached the point where he felt satisfied with what he had given the game. That, more than anything, is what allowed him to step away.

“I’ve done enough for the game,” David said. “I pleased myself with what I did while I played the game. I impacted my peers when I played and I made a name for myself and now I’m just trying to move on from the game and just, you know, let the next generation take over.”

That is really what came through in his explanation. David sounded fully at peace with the decision and comfortable with everything he put into his career. He also spoke with pride about one thing that defined almost his entire run in Tampa Bay: his ability to stay on the field.

“I’m extremely proud of the durability that I had throughout my entire career,” David said. “I never wanted to miss a game and I always took care of myself.”

David played 215 games for the Buccaneers, matching Derrick Brooks’ franchise tackle record at 1,714 in his final regular-season appearance. Since entering the league in 2012, he also ranks first in solo tackles and became one of only five players in NFL history to post at least 40 sacks and 35 takeaways.

Those numbers are part of the story, but they never fully captured what David was over 14 seasons. He showed up every year and gave Tampa Bay a level of consistency that is hard to replace.

Now the Buccaneers have to figure out what their defense looks like without David in the middle, while also juggling life without wide receiver Mike Evans on offense. David sounded at peace with the decision to turn the page on a legendary chapter in franchise football.
