The Miami Dolphins have been busy in the offseason, making a ton of impactful moves. One of their big moves was trading away Jaylen Waddle. This move shows the team is changing in a direction that could change their draft outlook.
Why the Miami Dolphins Could Look To Add Ty Simpson
One way things could shake up is at the quarterback position. Even though the team signed Malik Willis in Free Agency, Dan Orlovsky on NFL on ESPN thinks the Dolphins should draft Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson given the Dolphins’ rebuilding timeline.
“It makes me think, even though they signed Malik Willis, they should do their homework and entertain drafting Ty Simpson in Miami.”

Another reason that this idea makes sense is that Simpson and Willis are different types of quarterbacks. Simpson is more of a pocket passer, while Willis, with his great legs, is a play extender. However, both would fit offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik’s scheme very well. Slowik runs a play-action-oriented offense that both QBs could work well in.
The play action offense can make it easier for the quarterback to make their reads. Simpson’s physical profile is somewhat close to Mayfield’s, as they are only one inch and seven pounds apart. Mayfield has seen a lot of success in this offense, including his best year. Mayfield’s best year was in 2024, when he threw for 41 touchdowns and 4,500 yards.
The Dolphins also have the infrastructure to have a successful pocket passer. They have a good o-line, ranking 10th in the PFSN O-Line impact metric and receiving a C grade. Dolphins center Aaron Brewer was also nominated for Protector of the Year this past season, which goes to the best offensive linemen in the NFL.
The Dolphins’ new head coach and general manager, Jeff Hafley and Jon Eric Sullivan, respectively, are both from the Green Bay Packers. The Packers have had primarily pocket passers over the past couple of years with Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love. So, Hafley and Sullivan do have great experience in developing quarterbacks from the pocket.

Another reason they could look to draft Simpson is that he is a good prospect. Simpson got a B and ranked 25th according to PFSN’s CFB QB Impact Metric. Simpson is the 43rd-ranked player according to PFSN’s Big Board. He is also considered by many to be QB number two in this year’s draft.
Overall, Miami could be a good spot for Simpson to end up. While it might not be the first spot that might come to mind for many, it could prove to be a good move for both Miami and Simpson.
