WTA legend Serena Williams recently shared an admirable message about celebrating her body, which underwent a notable transformation after she embarked on a weight-loss journey with diet, exercise, and GLP-1 medication. The former World No. 1 has also completed her required time in the tennis testing pool and is eligible to return to professional tennis after February 22, 2026.
Serena Williams’ Message on Embracing and Celebrating the Value of Our Individuality
With 73 WTA singles titles, including 23 major titles to her name, Williams has conquered countless obstacles, but few were as personal as her battle with body image. Early in her career, she stood apart from her peers, her powerful physique challenging the norms of what a female athlete was expected to look like.
However, the Saginaw, Michigan, native navigated the challenges with her resilience and by blocking out negative opinions. In her recent Instagram post, the icon shared a glimpse of herself in an olive-green one-piece swimsuit, completing her look with a fluffy robe and tan-colored slippers, set against a backdrop of trees and a pool. In the caption, she added, “I am not perfect….but I’m perfectly me. Take out time today to celebrate being perfectly you! 💋.”

During her interview with Net-a-Porter in December last year, Williams opened up about her early struggles with her body image, its significance to an athlete’s mindset, and how she overcame them.
She expressed, “It was hard because when I was playing in the beginning – the first 15 years – my body was different. I had big boobs; I had a big butt. Every athlete was like super flat, super thin and beautiful, but in a different way. And I didn’t understand as an athlete how to deal with that. It does affect you mentally. Absolutely.”
Williams continued, “I don’t hear the noise. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. How am I going to sit here and change someone’s thought? If [you] don’t like me, you don’t have to. I’m not going to let anyone bring me down. I put enough stress on myself. The last thing I’m going to allow is someone else to do that.”
Williams had also reignited excitement across the tennis world when her name resurfaced on the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s registered testing pool last October. Under the current rules, any player eyeing a comeback must undergo six months of testing before they are allowed to compete in any event, and now she is eligible to come back.
