Alabama’s quarterback competition is open for business. Kalen DeBoer enters the 2026 season with a new signal caller thanks to an NFL departure, and the raging debate will be who that player will be.
Austin Mack
When Kirk Cousins’ look-alike (Ty Simpson) decided to go pro, Alabama’s quarterback search began. Fortunately, they got a glimpse of what the future could look like if Austin Mack wins the job.
The sample size was small, but the potential shone. Mack has a rocket for an arm, and the ball speed clearly was faster than Simpson’s. But does he have what it takes to win in the SEC? That remains his biggest question.
Mack stands 6’6″ and 235 pounds, so the NFL world already has its eyes on him. That frame stands out, and he’ll have an opportunity to put it on full display next year. If he can find chemistry with some of the young receivers, the passing attack is in good hands.
Keelon Russell
Compared to Mack, Keelon Russell stands a diminutive 6’3″ and 194 pounds, but the hype surrounding Russell may be too much to contain. Questions about Russell’s ability to challenge Simpson started in the preseason, and that will only strengthen in 2026.
Ty Simpson did great things for this Alabama offense, but Russell can do all of those things better. He has the arm to sling it around the field, and the athleticism and speed to pick up yards with his feet.
Alabama shouldn’t struggle to run the ball as much next year, so Russell’s legs pose a more serious threat than Simpson’s did thanks to that support. DeBoer’s already addressed some concerns through the transfer portal, and they may not be done yet.
Transfer Portal
While the fanbase is most likely set with either Mack or Russell, maybe DeBoer and this staff want to make another splash. While it’s highly unlikely given that the two returners would leave, the transfer portal may be a route they explore.
As of right now, Sam Leavitt and Demond Williams Jr. are both available. If DeBoer decides he values experience over unknown potential (something he did when bringing Michael Penix Jr. to Washington), he could bring in a challenger.
That’s a risky move in the new age of college football, but DeBoer enters a big year for his future with the program. A disappointing finish has fans upset, and he might be feeling the heat enough to go get a big name from the portal.
