Jared Goff Accuses Refs of ‘Using a New Version’ of NFL Rule After Controversial Call In Lions’ Loss to Chiefs

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs' win over the Lions had its fair share of controversy, and the Lions QB Jared Goff did not hold back.

On Sunday night, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs got a massive win over Jared Goff and the Detroit Lions.

Although both quarterbacks played well, Mahomes outdueled Goff, going 22-of-30 for 257 yards with three touchdown passes and a touchdown run, while Goff was 23-of-29 for 203 yards and two touchdowns. Neither signal call threw an interception.

Goff is now ranked as the 9th-best quarterback in the league with a PFSN QBi grade of 85.9, good for a B, while Mahomes is ranked 14th with a grade of 80.2, earning him a B-.

Of course, the game was not without controversy.

What Led Jared Goff to Call Out the Referees In the Chiefs’ Win Over the Lions?

In Sunday night’s victory, the Chiefs did not receive a single penalty called on them. With a team as polarizing as the Chiefs, that obviously caused quite a stir among football fans. One call, in particular, had fans quite upset.

During the first quarter, the Lions drove down the field on fourth and goal and ran a trick play. Goff went in motion on the play while running back David Montgomery took the snap. He threw the ball over to Goff, who briefly bobbled it but got a good block and made his way into the end zone to give the Lions what they thought was an early lead.

Instead, the Lions were called for an illegal shift, ruling that Goff had committed the penalty by going in motion from under center. The Lions settled for a field goal, taking a 3-0 lead rather than a 7-0 advantage.

Goff Explains His Stance on the Debatable Call by the Referees

After the game, Jared Goff was asked about the officiating. Although he did not specifically call out the referee, it was easy to tell he was not pleased with he call.

“I gotta do a little, I guess we all do – a little research on what exactly went wrong,” Goff told reporters. Because my hands were not under center, and I was set to begin the play.”

Goff was unsure what else he was supposed to do in the moment.

“As far as I was concerned, I thought that was the only thing I needed to do,” Goff explained. ” They were saying that – I’ve never heard this – because of how close I was to the center that then declares me as a quarterback and I can’t go in motion.”

Not only did Goff not know the rule, but he also told the media that his coaches were unaware of it.

“I was only under the impression that it was my hands under center so that’s a new version of that rule that it was my hands under center so that’s a new version of that rule that I had never heard of and I think a lot our coaches never heard of,” Goff said.

“And if that is the rule, I guess we need to do a little more research on that.” Goff clearly wasn’t pleased with the call, as it could have changed the course of what was just a three-point game early in the fourth quarter.
