49ers Sign Christian Kirk on $6M Deal to Pair With Mike Evans in Revamped WR Room

The 49ers had already added one WR, Mike Evans, earlier in free agency, but their work was not done, and now they have signed Christian Kirk.

One of the San Francisco 49ers’ offseason goals was to rebuild the wide receiver room around Ricky Pearsall. Jauan Jennings is still available as a free agent but is seeking a pay raise, and Brandon Aiyuk’s future in San Francisco is nearly nonexistent.

San Francisco 49ers Sign WR Christian Kirk

With the team trying to compete again, quarterback Brock Purdy needed more help, and the clear area where that was needed was at WR. Evans, a veteran at 32, has dealt with injury issues but remains a high-performing player. Also, Pearsall, who has WR1 potential, was out for most of last season due to his own injury, so depth is vital if this team wants to see success in 2026.

Evans was a great start, but the team needed to add more WRs to the roster, and it seems that, for them, Kirk, who just played for the Houston Texans, was the best choice available.

The contract, being a 1-year, $6M deal, may not seem like a big move for the 49ers, but it could be impactful. Kirk did not have a good year with the Texans, but in 2022 and 2023, he was ranked 32nd in PFSN’s WR Impact Metric.

For a potential 3rd/4th option on the 49ers, this would be an excellent outcome, especially on that cheap of a contract. If injuries begin to pile up, Kirk could step in and really help the offense. He is not going to be able to carry an offense or make game-winning plays each week, but as depth, Kirk is exactly what teams look for.

The top three of Pearsall, Evans, and Kirk are not bad going into the 2026 season, but one more addition, specifically through the draft, would do wonders for this roster. The 2026 WR class has talent in every round. On day two, the 49ers could get their rookie playmaker, and names like Ted Hurst or Elijah Sarratt stand out as options.

Time will tell whether the 49ers add another WR in 2026, but so far, they have prioritized rebuilding the room, and continuing to do so makes sense.
