Eleven weeks into the season, the uncertainty surrounding Brandon Aiyuk has only grown. What started as a simple injury question has now developed into something far more complicated for the WR and the 49ers. This week, the situation finally reached a breaking point, prompting head coach Kyle Shanahan to address it publicly for the first time.
What Happened to Aiyuk?
On Friday evening, Senior NFL Insider Dianna Russini reported that Brandon Aiyuk and the 49ers appeared to be heading toward a split. The news came as a surprise, considering Aiyuk signed a four-year, $120 million extension in August 2024.
Since then, he has played in only seven of a potential 28 games because of a torn ACL, MCL, and meniscus. Still, the expectation remained that he would work his way back onto the field at some point this season.
Even without him, the 49ers offense has held its own, currently ranking #8 on PFSN’s Offensive Impact metric, but Aiyuk’s potential return was still viewed as a significant boost for the stretch run.
Soon after her initial report, Russini revealed the reason behind the growing tension. She stated that “Aiyuk failed to attend meetings and declined to participate in 49ers team activities.”
She added that San Francisco “responded by voiding the guaranteed money in his contract for 2026, asserting that the absences amounted to a failure to fulfill his contractual obligations.”

On Saturday, Kyle Shanahan met with reporters to address the situation. When asked what specifically led to the contract’s voidance, he declined to provide details, saying that dealing with lawyers and contracts is not his area of expertise.
Shanahan was then asked if there was frustration tied to the size of Aiyuk’s deal, and he admitted, “Been coaching over 20 years and I’ve never been in a situation where a contract has been voided.”
The coach added, “What happened in July doesn’t have anything to do with the future. It had to do with circumstances that were out of a coach’s hands. I’d love for BA to be here and being a part of this team.”
Despite Shanahan’s comments, the chances of Aiyuk suiting up for the 49ers this season seem slim, and the likelihood of him remaining with the team in 2026 appears even lower. Moving on from Aiyuk this summer would provide San Francisco with significant financial relief.
It’s an unfortunate fallout for both sides. Aiyuk posted 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns during the 2023-24 campaign, helping lead the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance. He has been with the organization for six seasons since being drafted in the first round in 2020. If this is the end, it will be strange to see Aiyuk in different colors next year.
