Is Drake Maye the Youngest QB in Super Bowl History at 23 Years Old?

Maye was selected by the Patriots with the third overall pick in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. This means he is getting ready to conclude his second season, and he will do so in Super Bowl 60 against the Seattle Seahawks.

His youth is impressive, as he joins Dan Marino and Ben Roethlisberger as the only three quarterbacks ever to be 23 when playing in the big game. No quarterback has ever been younger than that in terms of years, and Maye is now the second-youngest quarterback ever to play in a Super Bowl when counting days as well.

Marino currently holds this record at 23 years and 127 days old, while Maye will be 23 years and 162 days old when Super Bowl 60 kicks off. Roethlisberger is the youngest ever to win one at 23 years and 340 days old, so the Patriots star can break that record if he were to defeat the Seahawks this year.

It’s been an incredible journey through two seasons so far, finishing his rookie year with a 4-13 record before winning an AFC Championship in his second season. The Patriots defeated the Denver Broncos to earn the opportunity to compete for the Vince Lombardi Trophy against the Seahawks, who defeated the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Championship game.

Maye will face off against Sam Darnold, who has been on an impressive journey of his own as well. He was essentially labeled a draft bust after ultimately failing with the New York Jets and became mostly a journeyman backup after that.

He was given a chance to be the Minnesota Vikings’ starting quarterback last season, but despite turning in an excellent 14-3 record, they let him go during the offseason.

The Seahawks benefited from their polarizing decision to do so, as they won the conference championship, while the Vikings missed the playoffs. The unlikely paths of these two quarterbacks, who both finished inside the top 13 in the PFSN QB Impact Rankings, as well as Maye’s youth, set up a ton of intriguing storylines to keep an eye on for the 60th edition of the big game.
