Vanderbilt vs. Kentucky Prediction and Preview

Vanderbilt (21-2, 7-2 SEC) arrives in the Bluegrass State having navigated a turbulent two-week stretch. After starting 20-0 (the best beginning in program history), the Commodores absorbed a 103-74 blowout at No. 2 South Carolina and an 83-75 loss to No. 17 Ole Miss before righting the ship with an 82-66 win over Florida.

The Florida game encapsulated both Vanderbilt’s alarming vulnerability and its undeniable ceiling. Shea Ralph’s squad scored just 10 points in the first quarter and trailed 35-25 at halftime. Then Mikayla Blakes took over.

The SEC’s leading scorer erupted for 14 third-quarter points, shooting 7-of-7 from the free throw line, and finished with 30 to lead the Commodores’ rally. It marked Blakes’ seventh game this season scoring 30 or more, and the sophomore phenom now has consecutive 20-point games dating back 36 contests, the longest such streak by a Vanderbilt player since 1999-2000.

Blakes’ supporting cast has been inconsistent. Sacha Washington contributed 14 points against Florida, but the Commodores shot just 25% from three against Ole Miss and have struggled when opponents load up to stop their star.

Senior guard Justine Pissott remains the team’s most reliable deep threat at 43% from beyond the arc, but others need to step up for Vanderbilt to reach its championship aspirations.

Kentucky (18-5, 5-4 SEC) is riding high after Sunday’s 93-73 demolition of Arkansas snapped a three-game losing streak that had threatened to derail a promising season. The catalyst? The long-awaited return of star forward Teonni Key.

Key, who missed six games with a dislocated elbow suffered against Missouri, returned with a double-double (15 points, 10 rebounds) that reminded everyone why this Kentucky frontcourt is among the nation’s best.

Her presence allows Clara Strack to operate without constant double teams, and the junior center responded with a career-high 33 points and 15 rebounds, the first player in program history with at least 33 points and 15 boards against an SEC opponent.

Strack reached 1,000 career points in the victory and ranks second nationally with 63 blocks. The Wildcats outscored Arkansas 33-24 in the fourth quarter, showcasing the killer instinct that was missing during their losing streak.

Point guard Tonie Morgan, recently named to the Nancy Lieberman Award midseason watch list, had 14 points and eight assists, while Amelia Hassett added 16 points. With Key healthy, Kenny Brooks finally has his full rotation available.

Kentucky owns the all-time series edge (33-28) and won last year’s meeting 96-78 in Nashville. The Wildcats are 10-1 at Historic Memorial Coliseum this season, and the crowd will be rocking for Youth Sports Night.

Vanderbilt’s slow starts are a real concern. If the Commodores fall behind early against a Kentucky team playing its best basketball in weeks, climbing back against Strack and Key in the paint will be extremely difficult. Blakes is capable of willing Vanderbilt to victory, but Kentucky’s frontcourt depth and home-court advantage give the Wildcats the edge in a tight one.

Prediction: Vanderbilt 74, Kentucky 78
