Louisville vs. Syracuse Prediction and Preview
Louisville’s losses this season have come exclusively to elite programs: No. 1 UConn, No. 3 South Carolina, No. 20 Kentucky, and now Duke. The Cardinals’ best ACC start in program history (11-0) is now behind them, but they still hold a 2.5-game cushion over the three teams tied for third place.
The Cardinals’ calling card has been remarkable depth. No player averages more than 12 points per game, yet Louisville has had 13 different players average at least two points per contest. Six different players have scored 20 or more in a game this season. The bench contributes 35.5 points per game, fourth nationally.
Laura Ziegler, a Saint Joseph’s transfer who earned All-Atlantic 10 honors last season (17.5 PPG, 10.4 RPG), has been crucial in her first Power Five campaign. The 6-2 Denmark native averages 10.9 points and a team-leading 7.6 rebounds while providing positional versatility.
Her ability to stretch the floor (she attempts nearly four three-pointers per game) could be key against Syracuse’s rim protector.
The Orange are built around freshman sensation Uche Izoje, who has transformed Syracuse’s ceiling. The 6’3″ center leads the ACC in blocks per game (2.6) while averaging 14.3 points and 9.4 rebounds. She has recorded 10 double-doubles this season and earned ACC Rookie of the Week honors six times, the most by any freshman in the conference.

Izoje is one of just two players nationally averaging at least 14 points, nine rebounds, and two blocks, alongside Kentucky’s Clara Strack. She is also the first Syracuse player ever named USBWA National Freshman of the Week and has appeared on the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Watchlist.
Her dominance at the rim (she scores 9.7 points per game there while shooting 61.7%) makes Syracuse’s paint a no-fly zone. The matchup against Ziegler figures to be the game’s pivotal battle.
Graduate guard Dominique Darius (13.0 PPG) provides veteran leadership, while Michigan transfer Laila Phelia (14.4 PPG) and Sophie Burrows (10.6 PPG) round out a balanced attack. Syracuse leads the ACC in offensive rebounds (17.5 per game) and ranks ninth nationally in total rebounding (43.4 RPG).
Louisville holds a commanding 21-8 advantage in the all-time series, having won nine of the last 10 meetings. But this Syracuse team bears little resemblance to recent Orange squads. The infusion of transfer talent and Izoje’s emergence have created a program that can compete with anyone in the ACC.
That said, the Cardinals have the edge in experience and depth, which could ultimately prove decisive in a game that stays close into the fourth quarter.
Prediction: Louisville 68, Syracuse 63
