Despite posting elite scoring numbers and leading Indiana’s offense, Mitchell’s exclusion left fans and analysts baffled as replacement options and official selections were announced.

Mitchell is having a phenomenal season for the Fever, putting up 25 points per game while shooting nearly 45% from beyond the arc. Night in and night out, the 30-year-old has been an absolute force on offense, dropping explosive performances to help guide Indiana straight into a playoff spot.
Despite her stellar production, Mitchell found herself left off USA Basketball’s initial 12-woman roster for the FIBA Women’s World Cup.
When veteran guard Kelsey Plum withdrew from the squad due to health and rest reasons, fans assumed Mitchell would be the frontrunner to step up into the open guard spot. Instead, USA Basketball announced guard Sonia Citron as Plum’s replacement, bypassing Mitchell once again.

The announcement immediately sparked heavy outrage across social media, with fans calling out the decision to overlook the Fever star.
One fan vented on X, writing, “Kiki I understand she’s been putting in work but where the hell is Kelsey Mitchell as a replacement, give that woman her due respect.”

Another user echoed the frustration while acknowledging the roster additions.
“Let’s go Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen. Should have called Kelsey Mitchell, but I digress. A’ja Wilson such a fraud,” they wrote.

Other supporters were equally vocal. “Kelsey Mitchell would have been perfect,” one X user wrote.
“They should put Kelsey Mitchell!!!!” another X user added.
While the snub stings Mitchell’s supporters, Citron’s inclusion has solid backing. The guard has put together an impressive run of her own. She averages 16.8 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game.
Meanwhile, for Mitchell, missing out on the international flight might have a silver lining off the hardwood. Outside of her basketball duties, Mitchell has already earned her Master’s degree in Sports Administration from the University of Cincinnati and is actively working toward her Ph.D. in Educational Leadership at Liberty University.
