Wings Star Paige Bueckers’ Historic WNBA Night Spoilt After Last-Minute Loss to Sparks

Paige Bueckers made WNBA history with a record-tying rookie performance, but the Dallas Wings’ night ended in heartbreak against the Sparks.

The Dallas Wings’ season has been a rollercoaster; unfortunately, most of it has been downhill. With a tough (9-27) record, the team has struggled to find consistency, and Wednesday night’s clash against the Los Angeles Sparks ended in yet another heartbreak.

The Wings fell short in a nail-biting (80-81) loss. Despite the setback, there was one bright spot on Wednesday night as rookie sensation Paige Bueckers put on a performance that etched her name into the history books.

Paige Bueckers’ Records in the August 20 Game

On August 20, Bueckers turned the WNBA spotlight onto herself with a night that fans will remember for years. She scored 44 points and matched the all-time WNBA rookie scoring record set by Cynthia Cooper back in 1997.

She did it with extraordinary efficiency, going 17-of-21 from the field (an astonishing 80.9%). That made her the first player in league history to score 40+ points while shooting above 80% from the floor.

Moreover, her outing also marked any player’s highest single-game scoring performance of the 2025 season.

Moreover, this wasn’t the first time Bueckers had shattered records in her young career. As per Polymarket Hoops just last month, on July 3, she became the fastest WNBA player to reach 250 career points since Seimone Augustus achieved the feat in 2006, doing it during a game against the Phoenix Mercury.

Along with her 44 points, she added four rebounds and three assists, keeping her team competitive until the very last minute. Moreover, after the game, she credited her midrange game for fueling her historic night.

“I truly think basketball has gotten away from it — it’s mostly layups and 3s. Teams don’t know how to guard it. So I think it’s an advantage when you can score in the midrange,” said Bueckers as per ESPN.

Still, Bueckers’ brilliance was insufficient to overcome the Wings’ struggles. From the opening tip, the Sparks dictated the pace.

The Wings trailed by two at the end of the first quarter and entered halftime down by seven. A third-quarter push gave the Wings a glimmer of hope, but the Sparks closed strong, dropping 22 points in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

Now the Wings look ahead to their next matchup against the Seattle Storm on August 22 at College Park Center.
