The Phoenix Mercury dominated the Dallas Wings on Monday. Not only did the Wings lose 102-72, but they also fell 6-14 this season. As they arrived in Phoenix, they looked towards a rebound from their already tough season. Instead, they suffered another lopsided loss.
Interestingly, head coach Chris Koclanes did not shy away from taking full accountability after the game.
Is Chris Koclanes His Own ‘Harshest Critic?’
Without mincing his words, Koclanes promised tough self-reflection in the wake of Wings’ worst performances of this season. He was simple and to the point while speaking to the reporters. “I’ve got to be better, I’m going to be my harshest critic.”
His blunt reaction gave fans and analysts some assurance that he is at least taking accountability for the franchise’s weakest showing so far.
Tough loss, but the @DallasWings are keeping their heads high. Myisha Hines-Allen sees it as a learning moment, JJ Quinerly talks about bringing that dog mentality, and Coach Chris Koclanes stresses balancing growth with confidence.#WNBA | #WingsUp | @ThePodiumFinish pic.twitter.com/BspBnttprI

The Wings’ damage was pretty immediate and decisive. The Mercury were controlling the game right from the beginning, exposing Dallas’ shortcomings on both ends. The Wings were faltering in execution, with warning signs visible right from the beginning. They had a stagnant offense, erratic rotations, and a non-cohesive defense. They were collapsing under pressure.
To top it all off, Sami Whitcomb piled on 36 points for Phoenix, leaving Dallas lifeless.

This isn’t the first time this has happened. Koclanes has acknowledged this earlier, complaining that his team still lacks a consistent identity.
“We are searching still, for what our identity is as a team because it changes from night to night,” Koclanes said in the post-game press conference. “It’s defensively we want to get up and guard the ball. I want us to be aggressive … defense and rebounding to keep us in games … offensively, we’re playing through Paige and Arike.”

They struggled against the Las Vegas Aces as well. Dallas had led late before Vegas rattled off a 17-2 run, perhaps thanks to the questionable in-game management. Koclanes admitted that he should have utilized a challenge and timeout in the final stretch to offset the shift. He owned up to his mistakes then, too.
It seems criticism has been following Koclanes since the season began. After a 1-11 opening to their season, fans and analysts questioned his tactics. Even his player Arike Ogunbowale hinted at a “disconnect” between the coach and the team after a close loss.
The Wings are currently at a crossroads: either to continue growing or to continue drifting in mediocrity. Koclanes’ criticism starts to set that tone, with every fan and analyst’s eye watching them up close. There’s still time to save the season, but Dallas is in danger due to its early-season performance.
