Following Tuesday’s (June 17) intense matchup with the Connecticut Sun, Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White didn’t mince words about the WNBA’s officiating. Frustrated by what she saw as questionable calls throughout the game, especially in the incident involving star Caitlin Clark, White delivered a brutal critique of the league’s refereeing.
With several fouls and a physical atmosphere on the court, her outspoken remarks have sparked plenty of discussion.
Stephanie White Voices Frustration Over Controversial Calls
Tuesday night’s Fever win over the Sun was a moment to celebrate, but head coach White’s blunt criticism of WNBA officiating quickly took center stage. The Fever had claimed an 88-71 win, a game marked by multiple heated moments, but White’s postgame comments stole headlines.
Addressing the controversial officiating in the post-game media appearance, which at times seemed clearly to be going against the Fever, White said:
“It’s a league-wide issue. Bad officiating is bad officiating… Everyone is getting better but the officials,” White said bluntly. “We need to remedy that. I mean, we’ve heard every coach talk about it. I don’t know what the answer is.”
White’s frustration is understandable, especially given how the game unfolded. More than basketball, the game snowballed into a heated tussle, full of tense moments and multiple fouls that had fans and analysts buzzing.

Most notably, Marina Mabrey’s shoving of Clark in the third quarter shocked many viewers. Clark and Mabrey were assessed technical fouls during the incident, while Jacy Sheldon was handed a flagrant foul.
And the drama didn’t stop there. Later in the fourth quarter, Sheldon drove hard to the basket, only to be knocked down by Fever’s Sophie Cunningham. Cunningham’s foul was ruled a flagrant-2, leading to her ejection, as well as ejections for Lindsay Allen and Sun’s guard Sheldon, which again sparked fans’ fury.
The game’s physical intensity and controversial calls tested the patience on both sides. But through the chaos, the Fever showed why many consider them championship contenders.
After a rough patch during Clark’s five-game injury absence, the team is back in stride, having won two straight games, including a huge victory over the previously undefeated New York Liberty just a few days earlier.
Clark led the charge against the Sun with 20 points, while Kelsey Mitchell contributed 17 points of her own, helping secure a convincing win at home. The team’s ability to perform under pressure, despite the distractions and physical play, highlights their resilience.
Veteran Sun center, Tina Charles, added 20 points, while Olivia Nelson-Ododa chipped in 14 points, but their efforts weren’t enough to save the team from a stinging defeat. The Sun are now with a 2-9 record, sitting near the bottom of the league.
