‘Ridiculous,’ ‘Truly Pathetic Losers’ — Sports World Reacts As WNBA Subreddit Bans Sophie Cunningham’s Name Amid Trans Controversy

Sophie Cunningham's name was filtered on the WNBA subreddit, sparking strong reactions amid her controversial stand against trans athletes.

Sophie Cunningham’s comments on transgender athletes have kept the Indiana Fever guard at the center of one of the WNBA’s biggest off-court debates. Now, the controversy has moved to Reddit.

Cunningham’s name and several related terms were reportedly filtered on the r/WNBA subreddit, triggering angry reactions from supporters who viewed the move as censorship.

Sophie Cunningham’s Name Ban on WNBA Subreddit Sparks Backlash

Cunningham became a major talking point after telling ESPN, “I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men,” while discussing transgender athletes last month.

She promptly doubled down, saying she believed keeping transgender athletes out of women’s sports was “common sense.” Her comments quickly made her one of the WNBA’s most polarizing figures.

The latest controversy began when users noticed that several Cunningham-related terms were being filtered on r/WNBA.

The reportedly blocked terms included “Cunningham,” “Sophie,” “sc,” “scunningham,” “soph,” and “sophiacunningham.” This name ban came as Cunningham celebrated her 30th birthday Sunday, while her name was already drawing attention online.

One user also shared a private exchange with an r/WNBA moderator, who explained that content was being filtered because posts about Cunningham tend to attract “trolls” and users who are not regular WNBA “fans.”

The moderator even warned the user that continuing to press the issue could result in a ban.

That explanation did little to calm the backlash, though.

“It’s literally impossible to create a more ridiculous fanbase than the WNBA. The second this sport backs into finding popular players like Sophie Cunningham or Caitlin Clark, they do everything they can to destroy them,” OutKick’s Ian Miller argued.

Gina Milan was even more blunt, blasting the move by saying, “Wow. These people are truly pathetic losers. Any comment, @Reddit?”

Another X user mocked the situation, quipping, “Reddit remains undefeated as the lefty censorship final boss LOL.”

One X user questioned whether the move should surprise anyone, asserting, “If this surprises you at all then you probably haven’t been on Reddit since about 2015.”

“Looks like the @WNBA wants to fail,” another X user warned the WNBA.

However, Front Office Sports media and entertainment reporter Ryan Glasspiegel pushed back against blaming the WNBA itself.

“WNBA has plenty of issues but this is a Reddit problem that doesn’t really have anything to do with the WNBA. The Reddit mods are some of the most inexplicable power trippers in the universe. There’s a blanket ban on crime stories in the Chicago subreddit, for example. The censorship on that platform is an absurdity,” Glasspiegel explained.

It’s essential to note that Reddit forums are run independently of the leagues and teams they cover, and moderators set their own rules for what can and cannot be discussed. However, the storm Cunningham’s comments brewed refuses to die down just yet.
