Fever Star Sophie Cunningham’s Aggressive Interaction Against Sun Player Goes Viral for All the Wrong Reasons

Sophie Cunningham's viral foul on Leila Lacan stole headlines before an injury cut short her night in Fever's comeback win vs. Sun.

It only took a flash of action for Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham’s night to take a hard turn. Less than a minute into Sunday’s game against the Connecticut Sun, Cunningham was already all over social media because of a heated moment fans couldn’t stop replaying.

But what started as a fiery scuffle quickly became something a lot more serious, as a late-game injury left teammates and fans worried about Cunningham’s future in the 2024-25 campaign. What really happened to spark all this drama, and what’s next for the Fever after one of the wildest nights in recent memory?

Why Sophie Cunningham’s Early Clash With Sun’s Leila Lacan Sparked Debate Online?

The opening seconds had Cunningham tangled up with Sun guard Leila Lacan during a full-court press. She lost control of her dribble, and as both players fought for the ball, the Fever guard knocked Lacan to the floor. Officials checked the replay and decided the contact was unnecessary, calling a technical foul on Cunningham.

Sun fans were vocal about the call, especially with replay angles showing Cunningham’s leg striking Lacan in the groin during the battle for possession. The clip spread fast online, with many claiming Cunningham’s move was reckless.

After the game picked up again, the technical foul set a chippy tone for the whole night. If that opening scuffle frustrated Fever fans, it was nothing compared to what happened next.

Midway through the game, with Indiana trailing 13-17, Cunningham was standing under the hoop on defense when Sun guard Bria Hartley drove hard into the lane. After Hartley passed the ball, she collided with Cunningham’s left leg, dropping the Fever guard to the floor in obvious pain.

Cunningham grabbed her leg and let out a scream while teammates and athletic trainers rushed over. She needed help standing and was escorted off the court to the locker room.

What Are the Latest Updates on Cunningham’s Injury?

This injury comes at a tough time for the Fever, who are already fighting through a thin roster. Clark is out indefinitely with a groin issue, while Aari McDonald and Sydney Colson have already been ruled out for the season. Losing Cunningham — who was expected to play a larger role — gives the team even fewer options heading into the heart of the 2024-25 campaign.

Head coach Stephanie White called the injury “troubling” and described her own reaction as “holy s**t.” She continued:

“Especially the way that she fell and how she was holding herself and how much pain she was in, at the time it’s like, ‘Holy s–t,’” White said. “Then you go down there, you see her and it’s like, OK, I just want her to calm down and regroup. After that, it turns to problem solving. How do we put ourselves in a position to win?”

The team confirmed Cunningham will get an MRI on Monday when the Fever return to Indianapolis.

Despite all the setbacks, Indiana pulled together and delivered a wild finish. Trailing by 21 points at one stage, the Fever came roaring back and stunned the Sun 99–93 in overtime, securing the biggest comeback in franchise history. The win showcased the team’s fight, but with Cunningham’s status uncertain, there’s no question it could be a challenging road ahead.
