Sonia Citron Breaks Caitlin Clark’s Record in Style As Fever Star Loses Yet Another WNBA Achievement

Sonia Citron breaks Caitlin Clark’s rookie record with another standout performance, as the Mystics star cements her place in WNBA history.

The WNBA’s rookie sensation, Sonia Citron, just stole one of basketball’s biggest spotlights. While everyone’s been watching Paige Bueckers and still talking about Caitlin Clark’s record-breaking debut season, the Washington Mystics guard quietly made history of her own. Her latest performance didn’t just help her team; it officially put her name above Clark’s in the record books.

How Did Sonia Citron Surpass Caitlin Clark’s Record?

The WNBA made it official on X that Citron just passed Clark for the most double-digit scoring games by a rookie in league history. Her 36th outing came against the Los Angeles Sparks, where she put up 12 points, three assists, and two steals, a stat line that perfectly reflects her all-around impact.

Drafted third overall out of Notre Dame, Citron brought her trademark versatility and sharpshooting straight into the pros. Averaging 15.1 points, four rebounds, and 2.4 assists on eye-popping shooting splits of 47.3% from the field and 43.9% from three-point range, she’s quickly proving she’s more than just a solid rookie. She’s become a foundational piece for the Mystics’ future.

Additionally, Citron and fellow rookie Kiki Iriafen not only earned All-Star nods but also helped the Mystics stay competitive through much of the 2024-25 campaign, even though the team eventually slipped out of playoff contention.

Her consistency has been the difference. While many rookies flash hot and cold, Citron’s ability to deliver night in and night out sets her apart, ultimately toppling Clark’s mark and putting her firmly in the spotlight.

How Does Paige Bueckers Continue Breaking Caitlin Clark’s Records?

While Citron has made her mark, Bueckers is operating on another level entirely. She’s running away with Rookie of the Year honors, dazzling with history-making numbers for the Dallas Wings.

Bueckers became the fastest rookie ever to reach 500 points and 150 assists, outpacing even Clark. She also smashed Clark’s All-Star voting record with more than 805,000 votes in her rookie year compared to Clark’s 700,735.

Earlier in the season, Bueckers reached the 250-point milestone in just 13 games, while Clark needed 16 games to achieve the same feat. Clark’s original pace had made her the fastest to reach 250 points since 2006.

So the Indiana Fever guard, though still a generational talent, is now watching her contemporaries step up and claim slices of history for themselves. She’s seeing her historic first-year achievements slowly chipped away by this incredible rookie class.
