What Happened to Angel Reese? Sky Coach Tyler Marsh Reveals Devastating Update on Chicago Star’s Back Injury

Sky star Angel Reese remains sidelined with a back injury as coach Tyler Marsh offers a bleak update amid Chicago's fading playoff hopes.

After Angel Reese was ruled out for her third consecutive game with a back injury, Chicago Sky coach Tyler Marsh offered a bleak update on the star forward’s status.

Reese missed Tuesday’s 78-64 home victory over the Washington Mystics, in which her struggling squad snapped its league-worst eight-game losing streak. That marked the two-time All-Star’s fifth absence in seven outings since the All-Star break, with her last appearance coming in Chicago’s 103-86 road loss to Washington on July 29.

With only 15 contests remaining, Reese is running out of time to return and help the Sky turn around their 8-21 campaign, with no end in sight to her hiatus.

What Did Tyler Marsh Say About Angel Reese’s Return Timeline?

Ahead of Tuesday’s contest, Marsh was asked if he could give a “more definite” update on what Reese is “going through” and provide a “more concrete timetable for her return.” The first-year head coach was unable to do so, noting that the Sky are taking a wait-and-see approach, with Reese under daily evaluation.

“There isn’t a concrete timetable as to the extent that I know,” Marsh said. “It’s the back injury, and she continues to be day-to-day. … I think she’s progressing, but it’s still kind of wait and see.”

Marsh added that Reese missed shootaround earlier in the day “due to an illness,” further complicating her rehab efforts.

How Did Reese Perform in Her Last Game Before Her Absence?

In her most recent showing on July 29 against the Mystics, Reese posted a double-double with team highs of 22 points and 13 rebounds, racking up three steals and two blocks. However, she shot just 6-for-16 (37.5%) and committed five fouls, ending the evening with a plus-minus of minus-11.

After the game, the 23-year-old noted that she was battling through her back ailment, which had sidelined her for the previous two outings.

“It was ugly, ugly for me, but I tried to push through as much as I could for my teammates because I know they need me out there,” Reese said. “When I am out there, I don’t think about an injury. It can happen anyway, anytime. If I’m thinking about it too much, it’s gonna happen again. So, just trying to fight through contact as much as I can and do whatever I can for the team.”

Since then, Reese has been listed on the injury report, with Marsh attributing her extended absence to a precautionary measure earlier this month.

Despite Chicago snapping its prolonged losing skid, it has the league’s third-worst record (8-21) and is 6.5 games back of the final playoff spot. As such, the Sky could continue to exercise caution with their leading scorer (14.2 points per game) and rebounder (12.6 rebounds per game) in what is shaping up to be a lost season.
