For any high-performing athlete, their mental health is as important as their physical health. WNBA superstar Caitlin Clark shed light on this recently, opening up about using a sports psychologist and how it has helped her.
Caitlin Clark Talks Honestly About The Benefits of Using A Sports Psychologist
After an injury-ravaged sophomore campaign, Clark has been in terrific form to start her third season for the 4-2 Indiana Fever. In the team’s recent win against the Valkyries, she scored 22 points and dished out 9 assists. Prior to that win, she produced back-to-back double-doubles. She is currently averaging 23.8 points, 9.0 assists, 4.4 rebounds, and a steal.
As an iconic athlete whose jaw-dropping talent has brought increased media attention and unprecedented interest in the women’s game, pressure comes with the territory. However, Clark has openly acknowledged seeing a sports psychologist and how it has helped her.
When asked by reporter James Boyd about her decision to be so open about seeing a sports psych and why it was important to her, she smiled.
“It’s part of what I do… I think it’s a great thing. I think any high-performing athlete would tell you, you wouldn’t be able to perform at that level without it,” she said.

“You have the human side to balance, and then you have the performance side, and you’re trying to deal with both, and at times it can be a lot. So, I think it’s maybe the most important thing that I have as part of my team …” pic.twitter.com/WOJUvp2vn4

She even went as far as to say that her sports psych is the most important part of her team.
“It’s just a good outlet for you…You have the human side to balance, and then you have the performance side, and you’re trying to deal with both. At times, it can be a lot. So, I think it’s maybe the most important thing that I have as part of my team,” she said.
“Obviously, my body and the performance, I want to be great, but I can’t do that if my mind is not right.”
She then continued to shed light on the importance of not getting too high or too low and of being a good teammate and leader.
“You don’t always have to power through… It’s ok to be disappointed or be upset or be stressed or doubt something,” Clark explained. “At the same time, you don’t want to get too positive or too high on yourself, you wanna continue to stay right in the middle… be a good teammate and remain confident in everything you do.”
It’s fair to say Clark has probably the largest spotlight of any WNBA star. With so many young athletes looking up, her talking positively and honestly about using a sports psychologist should continue to knock down stigmas around mental health.
Clark remains a true trailblazer for the WNBA, and it’s good that she’s surrounding herself with the right resources who can help her deal with the immense pressure that comes with being the face of the league.
