Saniya Rivers Sends Strong 4-Word Message With Stunning Outfit As She’s Picked By Sun in WNBA Draft

Saniya Rivers didn’t just walk into the 2024 WNBA Draft — she owned it. With one of the boldest looks of the night and a powerful message on full display, the former NC State star made sure everyone knew she was ready for the big stage. Now, she’s officially a pro after being selected No. 8 overall by the Connecticut Sun.

Known for her defensive grit and electric athleticism, Rivers is bringing her versatile game to a team that’s always in the playoff mix. But even before her name was called, Rivers had already won part of the night with a fashion statement that got people talking — and a four-word message that said everything about how she feels stepping into the league.

Saniya Rivers Backs Up Viral Message With Versatile Game, Unshakable Confidence

Written in permanent marker on a sleek beige purse, Rivers’ message — “the WNBA been poppin” — quickly went viral as the centerpiece of her pre-draft look. It wasn’t just a fashion flex but a declaration of pride in the league she’s joining. Between her confidence and style, Rivers stole the show before the picks started rolling in.

Rivers is more than just a headline; she has the game to match the energy. “I feel like I’m versatile, and that’s what’s really gonna make me stick in the league,” she told Essence. “Just being whatever piece I need to be with the team, playing whatever role.

“I feel like with me being long and so athletic, I feel like I can defend multiple positions,” Rivers said. “I feel like I can be on the wing. I can play point guard. Just looking forward to being able to give a team whatever they need from me.”

That versatility showed up every night for NC State. In three seasons with the Wolfpack, Rivers averaged 11.1 points per game, 6.0 rebounds, and 3.5 assists. Her length, court vision, and defensive instincts made her one of the toughest matchups in the ACC. She credits her ability to guard multiple positions and operate across the floor as her biggest assets — along with her drive to keep improving her three-point shot.

“Getting my three-ball consistent. I feel like I know I can hit them. I feel like it’s not a mechanical thing. I think it’s a confidence thing. Just knowing that I can make it and just getting smooth right into it, I think that’ll really be a big thing for me.

Confidence — Rivers has it in spades. As she should.

Rivers on Fashionable WNBA Draft Look: ‘I Just Wanted to Be Different’

Rivers’ red hair, two braids, and custom purse weren’t just random choices — they were intentional throwbacks to her younger self and a nod to the next chapter in her journey. “I just wanted to be different,” she said. “I haven’t rocked two braids since high school… I’m bringing out that dog again.”

Her confidence got a boost from former Wolfpack teammate Aziaha James, who was selected No. 12 overall by the Dallas Wings. “She told me I look good a thousand times,” Rivers said. “We just really boost each other’s confidence… we just keep each other level-headed.”

Now, Rivers is taking her talent and message to Connecticut, and she’s doing it her way.
