Conservative sports writer Jon Root has slammed the WNBA for prioritizing political ideology over biological science in defining player eligibility.
After Wednesday’s WNBA task force meeting on the issue concluded without setting any concrete rules, Root publicly mocked the league’s inaction.
Jon Root Blasts WNBA Task Force for Avoiding Biological Sex Standard in Transgender Debate
In an ESPN article published in July, Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham publicly voiced support for restricting women’s sports exclusively to biological females. Her comments became a flashpoint, drawing both supporters and opponents to demonstrate outside Fever games in cities including Seattle and Portland.
Adding to the controversy, former NBA players Enes Kanter and Royce White declared their intentions to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft. They claimed that under the current vague gender policies, they could self-identify as women to qualify.
In response to growing public pressure and media scrutiny, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said the matter would be discussed by a task force of team presidents and general managers at a previously scheduled meeting on Wednesday.
The task force consisted of WNBA team presidents and general managers, alongside league executives. The meeting’s purpose was to address the transgender eligibility narrative. However, they did not establish any new eligibility rules or gender guidelines.
In a statement from a WNBA spokesperson, the league emphasized that it will handle ongoing eligibility discussions thoughtfully and in line with its core values. It also condemned political stunts and “bad-faith efforts” meant to demean or marginalize others.
Conservative commentator Root mocked the statement, ridiculing the WNBA for prioritizing league “values” over biological science and taking months to define what a woman is.
”WNBA: We won’t approach the conversation about men in women’s sports biologically and scientifically. We’ll approach the convo in a way that aligns with ‘the values of our league.’ Also WNBA: We’re gonna need ‘weeks and months’ to figure out what a woman is,” Root wrote on X.

In another X post, he labeled the league “unserious” and noted:
“The fact that the WNBA can’t admit that a woman is an adult human female shows how unserious this league is & how captured they are by liberal ideologies/politics.”

The WNBA is caught between sticking to its values and setting strict rules for who can play. By leaving its policies vague, the league continues to invite public stunts and harsh criticism from commentators like Root, who insist that protecting women’s sports requires clear, science-based boundaries.
