Paige Bueckers Draws Inspiration From NBA Legend Stephen Curry As Wings Rookie Leads Struggling Team

Paige Bueckers channeled Stephen Curry's 2009 motivational promise after the Wings' 100-78 loss to the Atlanta Dream, vowing to figure things out.

The Wings’ locker room was half-empty Friday night. Eight players suited up against Atlanta, and their star rookie was battling illness. But when Paige Bueckers stepped to the podium after another crushing loss, she reached back to 2009 for the perfect words to capture this moment.

How Did Paige Bueckers Channel Stephen Curry’s Message?

Bueckers referenced one of Stephen Curry’s iconic tweets from 2009 when addressing the Dallas Wings’ rough 2024-25 WNBA season. The connection came naturally after another tough loss for the Wings, who went down 100-78 to the Atlanta Dream on Friday.

When asked about the Wings’ forgettable season, the No. 1 pick of the 2025 Draft class drew inspiration from Curry’s tweet that sent X (formerly Twitter) into a frenzy in 2009. “Promise to all the Warrior fans…we will figure this thing out…if it’s the last thing we do, we will figure it out,” Curry had written in his tweet.

The former UConn star assured the Wings faithful with a similar message after her 16-point, 10-assist double-double against the Dream.

What Was Bueckers’ Promise to Wings Fans?

Speaking to reporters after the loss, Bueckers was asked about her thoughts on the season. “I mean, just to stick with it, like, whoever we have in that locker room, whoever puts on a Wings jersey that night, that’s who we’re going to war with,” the guard said.

“And that’s what we believe in… We don’t need exterior belief, like, in that locker room we feel like we have enough, and we’re always gonna fight and show up that way. And I remember Steph Curry, before the Warriors became the Warriors, like, he tweeted out, like, ‘just stick with us… We’re gonna figure it out.'”

Bueckers added that the team was not short on belief and was clear about what they were building. “I just have this undying belief in it. I know that we continue to do things the right way, we continue to believe in each other, continue to invest our whole lives into this basketball thing, the results will come.”

Injury troubles and inconsistency have derailed the Wings’ campaign. They took the court with eight available players on Friday, with Bueckers herself listed as questionable with an illness. However, she did suit up against the Dream, playing for over 30 minutes.

The short-handed Wings were no match for Atlanta, who punched a playoff ticket with the win against Dallas. The loss now sees Dallas at the bottom of the table with a rough 9-31 record.

Despite this forgettable season for the Wings, Bueckers has been impressive in her maiden WNBA campaign with 19.0 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game. Only time will tell if the Wings can have a better 2026 season with a full squad available at their disposal.
