Paige Bueckers Delivers Heartbreaking Update On Lingering Knee Injury As Wings Rookie’s Struggles Continue

Despite a standout rookie season, Paige Bueckers’ chronic knee pain has sidelined her again, raising long-term concerns for the Dallas Wings’ playoff hopes.

Paige Bueckers stepped into the WNBA with all the expectations that come with being college basketball’s biggest star. But her rookie season with the Dallas Wings has become defined by something she’s been fighting since high school: a knee condition that refuses to go away. Now, as the Wings battle for playoff positioning, they’re forced to make difficult decisions about their franchise cornerstone.

Why Is Paige Bueckers Missing Sunday’s Crucial Game Against Las Vegas?

The Wings have officially ruled Bueckers out of Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Aces, citing rest as the reason. However, this absence stems from something much deeper than simple fatigue. The rookie has been managing a chronic condition that has shadowed her basketball career for years.

Earlier in July, Bueckers provided a candid update on her condition, offering rare insight into what professional athletes face when dealing with persistent pain. She openly discussed her battle with patellar tendinitis and how it affects her daily routine.

She said, “I’ve been dealing with patellar tendinitis since I was in high school. In a sense, you’re managing it at all times. There’s no day where it probably doesn’t hurt. But to be on the second night of a back-to-back where I just played 38 minutes, it usually never feels great the day after the game. But we usually either have a off day or a light practice day to where I can recover… Assuming I would either have to play a lot of minutes or be managed, we thought it was the smart thing to do to rest and recover.”

Her honesty about playing through constant pain reveals the reality many professional athletes face. The fact that there’s “no day where it probably doesn’t hurt” puts her exceptional performance this season into perspective.

How Has Bueckers Performed Despite Her Physical Limitations?

The 2025 WNBA Rookie of the Year front-runner has remained extraordinary despite her physical challenges. Through her first 20 games, she has averaged 18.1 points while dishing out 5.6 assists and grabbing 3.9 rebounds per game.

Additionally, Bueckers has made league history by becoming the first player to tally over 350 points and 100 assists in their first 20 career games. This achievement underscores her unique combination of scoring ability and court vision that made her such a coveted prospect.

Wings HC Chris Koclanes has emphasized that Bueckers’ absence represents a calculated health decision rather than simple load management. With back-to-back games placing added strain on players who log heavy minutes, the Wings have prioritized her long-term wellness over short-term availability. The team remains hopeful that she will return on Monday to face the top-seeded New York Liberty.

Dallas enters this stretch with a 7-18 record, the second-worst mark in the league. The Wings continue to rely heavily on Bueckers’ production due to a lack of depth and several key players missing from their rotation. While playing her heavy minutes may boost their immediate impact, her chronic condition creates a challenging balance between her short-term performance and long-term health.
