Paige Bueckers Bids Goodbye to UConn After Phenomenal 5-Year Stint To Officially Declare for the 2025 WNBA Draft

The UConn women’s basketball team boast 11 championships in the NCAA, and they look like a strong contender to add another one in the bag this year as well. They boast the likes of Paige Bueckers, Azzi Fudd, Sarah Strong, and on their roster.

Azzi Fudd has already made a decision on her basketball future, and has mentioned that she will be returning to Connecticut next year. Although the future looks to be secured for the UConn, it looks like they will be losing their superstar.

Bueckers Leaves UConn Behind for the WNBA

As per basketball analyst Rebecca Lobo, who also graduated from the same university, Paige is officially declaring for the 2025 WNBA Draft. The decision comes as a shock, considering it is still an ongoing season for her in the March Madness, where she will be facing Oklahoma in the Sweet 16.

Lobo posted on X, “Paige Bueckers confirmed to us today that she will enter the 2025 [WNBA] Draft. (Some had suggested she would not declare, play in Unrivaled, and then declare in 2026.)”

She mentioned that there were rumors that Bueckers might not declare this year, to play in the Unrivaled Basketball League, founded by Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier. However, it looks like Bueckers has decided to cash in on her recent success with Geno Auriemma and Co.

The young sharpshooter has been with UConn since 2020, playing a pivotal role in every bit of success the school had since then. Although they haven’t won a championship since 2016, Bueckers has been one of the few players taking UConn close to silverware.

She has been averaging 19.6 points, 4.6 assists, and 4.7 rebounds to cement her status as one of the best women’s basketball players in the world. She is undoubtedly one of the most efficient shooters in NCAA history, and has even drawn comparisons to the legendary Caitlin Clark.

Bueckers has made it quite evident that she can play both on and off the ball, while creating enough plays for the teammates around her. Additionally, she has also proven to be a hard worker, as the comeback from her ACL injury suggests.

With that said, the Dallas Wings currently hold the sweepstakes to draft Bueckers, but it would still be quite interesting to see if there are any more twists. Whatever the case, Bueckers’ clash against Caitlin Clark will surely be a blockbuster for all basketball fans.
