Breanna Stewart will start for the New York Liberty, who will face the Connecticut Sun at the Barclays Center on Monday.
The Liberty has a few names on the injury report, with Sabrina Ionescu, Natasha Cloud, and Isabelle Harrison joining the three-time WNBA champion. Since late July, a bone bruise in her knee has sidelined the veteran forward.
Breanna Stewart Injury Update: Liberty Superstar Set to Play After Questionable Status
Per WNBA Underdog’s latest, Stewart will be playing on Monday, making it welcome news for the Liberty. “Yeah, I’m going tonight,” she confirmed, according to Liberty reporter Myles Ehrlich.
“I just want to be back with my team, and I’ll try and help make things a little bit easier on all fronts, and know that this is important for our playoff push. I took the time I needed, and was on the training staff for the entire four weeks, but happy to be back.”

The defending champions have had a tough run, with injuries reducing their roster size. They head into Monday’s contest after losing to the Atlanta Dream on Saturday. Stewart has been a force for the side this season, averaging 18.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game.
The string of injuries has seen the Liberty go through a wobbly stretch, winning just four of their last ten games. They are fifth in the WNBA standings with a 22-15 record and two games behind the Dream. The three losses in five games dented their chances of securing a top-three spot after their excellent start to the 2025 campaign.
Earlier, Liberty head coach Sandy Brondello rued the team’s consistent injury woes that have hampered their flow and consistency. Per the New York Post, “We just can’t take a break on the injury front, and it’s been frustrating in that regard to not build that continuity,” Brondello said.

“We’re a really good team with our full group, but we haven’t been able to show it because everyone has been injured. But hopefully, we’ll get them back and we’ll have the next challenge of seeing how it all works in such a short period of time before the playoffs.”
The good news is that the extended games (40 to 44 this season with the addition of a new team) give the Liberty a chance to rebuild their chemistry and allow their stars to get healthy.
The Liberty play their next two games at home before hitting the road for an away skirmish against the Phoenix Mercury to round up their August slate of games. Only time will tell if they can cement a top-three spot in the playoffs.
