‘We’re Very Alike’ – Fever HC Stephanie White Sheds Light On Caitlin Clark Relationship, Shares Major Similarity

Indiana Fever HC Stephanie White has spoken about her relationship with the franchise superstar Caitlin Clark.

After starting the season with two losses in their first three games, Caitlin Clark, head coach Stephanie White, and the Indiana Fever have rebounded, winning three straight to improve to 4-2 and set a positive tone for the team.

Building on this momentum, Clark is averaging a team-high 23.8 points and 9.0 assists, with 4.4 rebounds, 1.0 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game. She is shooting 43.2% from the field, 34.8% from three, and 96.4% from the free throw line, all above her career marks.

In addition to Clark’s impressive contributions, Kelsey Mitchell (22.3 points per game), and Aliyah Boston (16.0 points, 7.8 rebounds per game) also play key roles. As a result, Fever head coach Stephanie White has a lot to work with, but it is Clark who gets all the hype – and sometimes the criticism.

This productive dynamic brings attention to a frequent question in sports: how do a player and their coach connect? So far this season, everything seems to be going well for White and Clark.

To elaborate on this dynamic, White joined Query & Company to discuss the new season, the team’s improvement, what remains to be done, and her relationship with Clark.

“It’s great,” White said when asked about her relationship with Clark.

White respects Clark because she sees similarities between them.

“I have so much respect and admiration for her as a player and a person, the way that she handles herself.” White explained.  “We’re very much alike in terms of our competitive fire, our competitive spirit, our perfectionism so to speak, and Type A personalities.”

Continuing to highlight what stands out, White mostly appreciates that Clark strives to be the best in the world at what she does.

“I love going to work with her every day,” White said. “I love that she loves to be coached and challenged and pushed. She wants to be the best, and you want to be surrounded by people who want to be the best, so she makes it easy to come to work and to get after it every day.”

Clark’s hard work has been evident this season. After playing in 40 games her rookie season and putting up 19.2 points and 8.4 assists per game, there were very high hopes for the former top overall pick. However, disappointing play and a series of injuries limited Clark to just 13 games, shooting just 36.7% from the floor.

That said, her shooting and decision-making have improved, and although turnovers remain a big issue (5.2 per game this season), Clark looks like she is ascending into one of the top players in the league. With her and White on the same page, there’s no telling how far the Fever can go.

Clark, White, and the Fever will take on the Valkyries again on Thursday evening. Tip-off is scheduled for 10:00 p.m. ET, and the game can be seen on PRIME.
