Fever Guard Lexie Hull Speaks on New Teammate Sophie Cunningham’s ‘Different Energy’

The Indiana Fever wrapped up their 2025 preseason on a high note, defeating the Atlanta Dream (81-76) on May 10. With a perfect (3-0) record that included wins over the Washington Mystics and the Brazilian national team, the Fever are riding strong momentum into the regular season.

Leading the way in their final preseason game was guard Lexie Hull, who dropped a team-high 14 points. But while Hull’s on-court performance turned heads, it was her words after the game that sparked just as much interest.

Lexie Hull’s Message for Sophie Cunningham

During the postgame press conference after the game against the Dream, she opened up about the connection she’s been building with Sophie Cunningham.

“I mean it’s so fun. Sophie is so fun to play with. She has a different energy about her. Something you can’t teach, something you can’t tell people to act like because you either have that or you don’t, and being able to play with her, you feed off of that, she feeds off the crowd, and the crowd feeds off her, so it’s super fun. And I’m just very grateful to play alongside her,” said Hull.

Cunningham joined the Fever through a blockbuster four-team trade finalized on January 31, 2025. The trade sent her from the Phoenix Mercury to Indiana, with the Dallas Wings and Connecticut Sun also involved in the shuffle. From day one, she’s clicked with her new teammates and quickly become a fan favorite.

But among all her new connections, it’s her growing friendship with Hull that’s standing out. The two have been spotted together frequently since the start of the preseason, and their chemistry is hard to miss, both in practice and on social media.

In one of Cunningham’s Instagram posts, Caitlin Clark playfully roasted the duo by commenting, “Little less tanning. A little more bball ladies,” highlighting their tight-knit bond and shared sense of humor.

On the court, Cunningham has had an impressive preseason run. In the Fever’s opener against the Mystics—her first game with the franchise—she dropped 21 points. She followed that performance with six points in the win over the Brazilian national team.

Unfortunately, the win against the Dream wasn’t all good news. Cunningham suffered a right ankle injury in the third quarter while fighting for a rebound. She landed awkwardly on the foot of Dream forward Rhyne Howard and limped off the court shortly after. She played 15 minutes before exiting the game, contributing five points and grabbing two rebounds.

While the extent of her injury is still being assessed, the Fever and their fans are hopeful for a quick recovery. “She keeps saying, ‘I’ll be fine.’ So I trust her,” said Fever HC Stephanie White during the May 10 game.

As the regular season approaches, the Fever looks more connected and determined than ever. And if Hull’s words are any indication, Cunningham’s “different energy” might be the exact spark Indiana needs to make some noise in 2025.

However, Cunningham wasn’t the only one that Hull praised during the post-game interview.

Hull’s Message to All the Mothers Across the Organization

The Indiana Fever wrapped up their final preseason game on May 10, just one day before Mother’s Day. During the postgame interview, Hull was asked an important question by a reporter: What role do mothers play within the organization?

Hull delivered the perfect answer. She took a moment to highlight and celebrate the tireless efforts of the many mothers who are part of the organization, both among the staff and her teammates.

“Women are amazing. I think you see that not only from our coaching staff, but our teammates that are moms. I mean, they do it all. And be able to come in and put their bodies on the line. Be away from their family a lot of the season. So it’s a great opportunity to celebrate those women in our lives, and I’m so grateful for what they’ve done for us, and just to be you know alongside them again,” said Hull during the interview.

Hull had an impressive preseason herself, averaging 11.0 points and three rebounds per game. She and the Indiana Fever now turn their focus to the regular season, where they’ll face the Chicago Sky on May 17 in what promises to be a thrilling opener to the 2025 campaign.

  1. Lexie Hull and Sophie Cunningham are extremely similar. They both hustle and play great defensively. Sophie has been effective offensively and now Lexie is showing she has become comfortable offensively as well. Both are a joy to watch.
