‘A Huge Win’ — WNBA World Reacts to Kelsey Mitchell’s $1.4M Payday To Stay With Caitlin Clark, Fever

Kelsey Mitchell finalizing a one point four million dollar payday to stay with Caitlin Clark and the Fever sparks major reactions.

Caitlin Clark made her priorities crystal clear two weeks ago on national television. Sitting courtside for NBC’s pregame coverage, she didn’t hesitate: “Our first priority is to sign Kelsey Mitchell back. She was first-team All-WNBA last year; she’s kind of my running mate in the backcourt. She makes it really easy for me.”

On Friday, the Indiana Fever delivered exactly what their franchise player demanded. Mitchell is finalizing a one-year, $1.4 million supermax agreement to return to Indiana, making her one of the first players in league history to sign under the new CBA’s supermax distinction.

Why Kelsey Mitchell’s $1.4M Supermax With Indiana Fever Is Smart Play for Both Sides

Mitchell earned every penny. The 30-year-old guard carried the Fever through an injury-ravaged 2025 season that would have sunk most rosters. With Clark limited to just 13 games before a groin injury ended her campaign, Mitchell stepped into the void and produced the best basketball of her career.

She averaged 20.2 points per game on 45.6% shooting, drained 39.4% of her threes, and finished fifth in MVP voting. The three-time All-Star led Indiana to the WNBA semifinals, where the Fever pushed eventual champion Las Vegas to five games before falling.

The one-year structure works for both parties. With Aliyah Boston now max-eligible under the new EPIC provision and Clark reaching that threshold next season, Indiana’s Big Three will consume nearly half the salary cap by 2027.

A one-year deal gives Mitchell the league’s highest salary now while preserving the Fever’s flexibility to figure out their long-term math. The WNBA world immediately recognized the significance.

“A huge win for both sides,” analyst Noa Dalzell posted.

Vanshay Murdock echoed the sentiment in all caps: “ONE-YEAR DEAL FOR KELSEY!”

Correlation’s account noted she’s “back for one year Supermax,” while Chris Williamson added, “Kelsey getting PAID PAID!! Well-deserved!”

Indiana Pacers reporter Tony East offered the strategic perspective: “I thought, given the timing of Boston/Clark coming FAs, new core rules coming, etc, that one-year deal made by far the most sense for both sides.”

Andrew Dukowitz looked ahead: “I expect a lot of these, the cap is expected to raise again next year, there might be a LOT of one year deals looking to build value and cash in next offseason. We might be doing this all over again next summer.”

Mitchell has spent her entire eight-year career in Indiana since the Fever drafted her second overall out of Ohio State in 2018. She’s the heartbeat of this franchise, a player who carried the organization through its darkest rebuilding years and now gets to chase a championship alongside one of the game’s brightest young stars.

The Fever open the 2026 season on May 9 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse against the Dallas Wings.

Mitchell will be there. Clark will be healthy. And Indiana’s title hopes remain very much alive.
