The Indiana Fever’s season looked uncertain when injuries and roster changes left them scrambling for answers. But sometimes the best solutions come from the most unexpected places. For Kelsey Mitchell and the Fever, that solution arrived in the form of Aari McDonald, a guard who went from waived to indispensable in a matter of weeks.
How Did Aari McDonald Transition From Waiver Wire to Starting Five?
McDonald’s journey with the Fever reads like a basketball rollercoaster. She signed with Indiana on June 1 via emergency hardship exception, only to be released on June 13. However, the team brought her back on June 25 after waiving DeWanna Bonner, recognizing her value when they needed it most.
The timing proved perfect. McDonald originally joined the Fever when Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham were sidelined with injuries. While their return initially led to McDonald’s release, Clark’s subsequent injury opened the door for McDonald’s comeback and her current role as a starter.
In the Fever’s recent 88-78 victory over the Dallas Wings, McDonald contributed 15 points while forming an effective backcourt partnership with Mitchell. The veteran guard led the way with 23 points, while Aliyah Boston recorded 12 points and 11 rebounds. Natasha Howard also posted a double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds.
That victory marked the Fever’s fourth consecutive win, pushing them into fifth place in the WNBA standings. Next up for Indiana is a challenging matchup on the road against the Seattle Storm.
What Makes Aari McDonald Such a Perfect Fit for the Fever?
Mitchell didn’t hold back her praise for McDonald during the post game press conference following the Wings victory, calling her addition a “blessing in disguise.”
“This is our blessing in disguise,” Mitchell said of McDonald. “We always tell her that we appreciate her, seriously, because, our season was all over the place. Obviously, with, you know, the people that were on the team, the people that weren’t on the team, injury, you know.”
Beyond the statistics, Mitchell highlighted McDonald’s basketball intelligence and chemistry with her teammates. She emphasized that McDonald understands the game, knows where her teammates are positioned, and has developed excellent chemistry with the entire roster. Despite filling the challenging role of replacing Clark, McDonald has exceeded expectations at every turn.
Head coach Stephanie White shares Mitchell’s enthusiasm for McDonald’s impact. During the same post-game press conference, White praised the guard’s energy and defensive intensity.
“Number one, her energy,” White said. “She’s an energy giver. She’s fast. Her speed changes the game for us. Her ability to get the ball from one end to the other quickly. Her ability to get into players defensively. You know, she changes the game for us in that way.”
White also emphasized McDonald’s rapid adaptation to the team’s system, noting her preparation and basketball IQ made the transition seamless.
“I have continued to be impressed with just how quickly she immersed herself,” White said. “She’s a student of the game. She studies it. She knew the offenses before she landed. She just has been a great fit for us.”
Additionally, White highlighted McDonald’s leadership qualities and accountability on the court. She emphasized that McDonald consistently takes ownership of her role and leads the team in a positive way, traits that have proven invaluable during the Fever’s current winning streak.
