Insider Reveals How Paige Bueckers Shockingly Adjusted to WNBA Officiating

A WNBA insider has shared how Dallas Wings rookie sensation Paige Bueckers adapted to WNBA officiating struggles. What did she change?

The 2025 WNBA postseason has exposed deep fractures in the league’s officiating standards. Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve erupted during the semifinals, which earned her an ejection after unleashing a scathing critique of the referees.

She didn’t hold back, labeling their performance as “malpractice” and calling for an immediate overhaul of the officiating leadership. The league responded by handing Reeve a $15,000 fine and suspending her for Game 4.

Her star player, Napheesa Collier, echoed those frustrations. During her exit interview, she clarified that officiating controversies have reached a boiling point across the WNBA. But amid this chaos, an insider has revealed how rookie phenom Paige Bueckers navigated these treacherous waters.

What Did an Insider Say About Paige Bueckers Adjusting to WNBA Refs?

On the latest episode of the “Bird’s Eye View” podcast, guest Ryan Ruocco revisited Bueckers’s comments in July about her early challenges with the whistle and revealed how quickly she learned to adjust.

“Before a game in Indiana, she said, ‘I’ve had to learn how to defend while fouling again. In college, there was such a focus for me to defend while not fouling. And here I’ve realized I can get away with this,” said Ruocco to WNBA alum and podcast host Sue Bird.

Moreover, the insider also emphasized the fact that the league should take quick action regarding officiating.

“There probably should be some level of public acknowledgement from the league level, whether it’s from as high as the commissioner’s office, or whether it’s from our officiating body,” added Ruocco during the podcast.

Fans first saw Bueckers’ entry into the inconsistencies of WNBA officiating back in June. In a high-intensity clash between the Dallas Wings and Connecticut Sun, the rookie guard buried a contested mid-range jumper in traffic while clearly absorbing contact.

Expecting an “and-one” whistle, Bueckers clapped her hands emphatically and shouted “And one!” only to be hit with a shocking technical foul for “clapping in the referee’s face.” The call stunned everyone. However, despite the bizarre sequence, Bueckers channeled her frustration and helped Dallas to an 86–83 victory.

That moment became a turning point. As Ruocco noted, Bueckers adjusted her approach to the game and the whistle, and her growth showed up in a season full of accolades.

Her true breakout performance came on August 20, when she scored 44 points and tied the all-time rookie single-game scoring record, setting the season’s highest scoring output by any player.

Even more impressive, she became the first player in league history to drop 40 or more points while hitting at least 80% from the field. But her brilliance wasn’t limited to one magical night. She became the Dallas Wings’ highest-scoring rookie ever as she averaged 19.2 points per game.

On top of that her shooting efficiency was remarkable as she converted 47.4% of her attempts which was the second-best rate among all guards in the league. These efforts helped Bueckers to win the 2025 Rookie of the Year Award.

Now, as the officiating crisis continues to dominate headlines, the question remains: how will WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert resolve this mounting problem?
