The Indiana Fever are finding ways to win basketball games, but off the court, the franchise is facing a bit of a rough time.
As the ongoing controversy surrounding comments made by Fever star Sophie Cunningham about trans athletes continues to face heat, head coach Stephanie White weighed in on the attention the franchise is getting for non-basketball reasons.

The Cunningham-sparked trans athlete discourse hit a boiling point this week, dragging protests and league discipline into the mix.
Fever head coach Stephanie White didn’t run from the issue when pressed by reporters, though she admitted she wasn’t “educated enough” to offer a definitive stance on the nuances of the debate.
“I don’t know that I would say that I’m educated enough from a scientific standpoint. I don’t ever believe that exclusion is an answer,” White said.

“I just don’t. I do think when we think about various levels of sport, various governing bodies of sport, and things that go into that. Like I said, I’m not educated enough at the different levels. I know, growing up, I played with the boys all the time.”
She acknowledged the difficulty of navigating the situation in the middle of a strong run of form. The Fever currently sit at 18-10, but the focus has continually drifted from the court.
“There is a frustration, of course, because we want to talk about basketball and we want to continue to work on our game, and we want to continue to grow as a team,” White noted.
“But I also understand, like this is part of our growth edge as a league, right? We have to be able to insulate as much as we can, and then we have to be able to lead with conversation.”
The current string of controversy traces back to an ESPN interview published last week, where Cunningham made her opinion clear on trans athletes participating in women’s sports.
The fallout was immediate and only grew ahead of the team’s matchup against the Seattle Storm on July 28. A rally was organized outside Climate Pledge Arena in support of Cunningham’s stance.
The Fever guard was booed by the Seattle crowd upon entering the game and during her first trip to the free-throw line. Following Indiana’s 105-95 win over the Storm, Cunningham was not made available to the media.
When White and the Fever players were asked about the rally, the team’s PR representative intervened to state that neither the organization nor Cunningham had any knowledge of, or contact with, the demonstration’s organizers.
The situation escalated further when the WNBA announced a five-game suspension for Seattle Storm co-owner Celeste Keaton due to an exchange with fans during that game.
