Early in the fourth quarter on Friday, Atlanta Dream star Angel Reese was called for a technical foul against Portland Fire guard Carla Leite.
It was Reese’s eighth technical of the season, which means she is set to miss Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Lynx unless the WNBA rescinds the call.
With Reese’s availability for the marquee matchup now in doubt, the decision quickly became a talking point across the WNBA.

The technical came after Dream star Rhyne Howard attempted a corner 3-pointer. As the shot went up, Leite wrapped both arms around Reese to prevent the league’s leading rebounder from crashing in.
Reese responded by putting her forearm on Leite’s back and pushed free from the scrappy Fire guard. Reese maintained that she had done nothing wrong, but the technical stood.

That call put Reese’s Sunday appearance in jeopardy and prompted plenty of criticism from fans who want the WNBA to take another look.

“Lol y’all gotta get better refs, man,” a sports data analyst wrote.
“Get new refs! They’re trash,” an entrepreneur urged the WNBA to handle the officiating.
Caitlin Clark’s name inevitably entered the discussion, particularly because the Fever star recently had her own eighth technical foul rescinded.

Some fans were less interested in the officiating debate and more concerned about missing what could be one of the season’s most anticipated matchups.
“Man, this the ONE Angel Phee game we get this season; if they don’t rescind this and get out of my face,” a Reese supporter couldn’t hide his disappointment.
According to “Across the Timeline” data, 190 technical fouls have been called this season, with only six rescinded. Clark was the latest player to have one overturned, following an Aug. 8 game between the Indiana Fever and Reese’s former team, the Chicago Sky.
Clark had inadvertently bumped into a referee. The WNBA reviewed the incident and eventually rescinded the technical.
Reese missing out on Sunday’s clash against Minnesota would be a significant absence for Atlanta.
The Dream (25-14), in a tight battle with the Fever (26-14) for the No. 4 seed, will host the league-leading Lynx (31-8), whose deep roster features Natasha Howard, Olivia Miles, Kayla McBride, and Courtney Williams.
More importantly, Reese would miss a chance to face Napheesa Collier, a perennial MVP contender and former Defensive Player of the Year.
Editor’s Note: As per the latest update from Alexa Philippou, the league notified ESPN that the Dream forward’s technical foul has been rescinded, and Reese is back at seven technical fouls on the season.
