Frustrated fans on social media are calling for a boycott of the WNBA following its recent statement on player eligibility.
Critics, including several social media personalities, argue that by avoiding clear rules, the league is failing to protect female athletes and safeguard the future of women’s basketball.
Social Media Outrage Explodes After WNBA Avoids Clear Stance on Biological Sex Rules
It all started when Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham said that women’s sports should be reserved exclusively for biological females to protect young girls. Her comments quickly ignited a firestorm across the league.
To expose what they saw as double standards in WNBA rules, former NBA players Enes Kanter and Royce White publicly “declared” for the draft as trans athletes. The massive online backlash pushed league executives to call an urgent task force meeting with general managers and team presidents.
However, the meeting ended without setting any clear eligibility rules, leaving fans and critics frustrated.
“Boycott them. Our girls deserve fairness in their sports and in their locker rooms. I’m just having really up to here with the WNBA and their cowardice,” Grammy-nominated songwriter Tish Hyman said in a video shared on X addressing the league’s statement.
Women are 51% of the population. The WNBA’s stance on women’s sports is unacceptable. They don’t know how to protect female athletes. Boycott the WNBA until they respect biological women and fairness in sports.#WNBA #WomensSports #Fairness pic.twitter.com/x2bGro2AcP

In their statement, the WNBA task force stated that it discussed transgender participation and online abuse directed at players, but made no changes to eligibility rules.
“Too many women are afraid to speak out for a variety of reasons. It’s unpopular to be that honest apparently,” an X user wrote.

One fan took a broader financial angle, writing:
“If only that would take care of the issue. The NBA has to financially keep the WNBA going. Maybe it’s time they pull the plug.”

The WNBA is in a real pickle right now. Many public figures, along with tons of fans online, have openly slammed the league for avoiding the issue.
The WNBA has so far shied away from making any real changes to its policy on the matter. But kicking the can down the road appears to be backfiring. Until league leaders step up and make an official call, they will continue to face public stunts and fan anger.
