A’ja Wilson went down hard against the Liberty, and now the Las Vegas Aces are facing their worst nightmare. The two-time WNBA champion fell awkwardly on her right wrist during what should have been a routine drive to the basket. Instead of celebrating a potential comeback against the reigning champions, Aces fans watched their superstar limp off the court after just 14 minutes of play.
How Serious Is A’ja Wilson’s Wrist Injury?
The Las Vegas Aces faced off against the New York Liberty in a blockbuster clash between the former and reigning WNBA champions. Liberty won the game 87-78 after a sensational 28-point performance from Sabrina Ionescu. Breanna Stewart and Leonie Fiebich also contributed with 15 points each.
Jackie Young was the standout player for the Aces with 19 points. However, Wilson’s night was cut short with a wrist injury, forcing her to exit the game. Wilson attempted to drive to the rim against Fiebich when they both made contact. The Aces star fell awkwardly on her right wrist, instantly leaving fans worried.
She had to leave the game and was not able to return. Becky Hammon later confirmed that she would be undergoing an MRI on Wednesday. Wilson has been averaging 20.7 points and 8.7 rebounds this season.
Following the injury, Aces insider Callie Fin has announced that the two-time WNBA champion is officially ruled out for the Mystics clash. There have not been any other details released on why she would be sidelined for such an important game.

It should also be noted that Wilson participated in a shootaround hours before the game in Washington. She was initially listed as questionable, but there is a chance that the Las Vegas franchise does not intend to aggravate the injury. She is the most important player for the franchise and will be key for many upcoming games.
What Does Wilson’s Absence Mean for the Aces?
This will be another blow for the Aces, who have been struggling to build momentum. Becky Hammon has criticized her own players in the media on multiple occasions, indicating a lack of professionalism most recently.
With Wilson’s injury struggles continuing, the Aces do not have a suitable replacement who can step up in the seven-time All-Star’s absence. She has already missed three consecutive games after being placed in concussion protocol.
The lack of roster depth has been a major issue that the Aces have failed to address. They lost Kelsey Plum, Alysha Clark, Tiffany Hayes, and Kate Martin all in the same offseason and it has caused their struggles entirely.
Despite missing multiple games due to injury, Wilson leads the team in points, rebounds, steals, and blocks. Apart from Young, the Aces have not had a standout performance from other players. They would require contributions from the likes of Jewell Loyd and Chelsea Gray, who have displayed their abilities before.
Meanwhile, the Mystics will come in firing with their star rookie duo of Kiki Iriafen and Sonia Citron. The Aces’ defense will have to be on their toes to look out for those two, along with an in-form Brittany Sykes.
